Here is my June challenge piece. This piece was so fun.  I used to live near the Hollywood, Florida beach.  We spent every minute we could enjoying our time on the beach.  The quilt piece is going to spend the summer on my dining room table.

Here is my May challenge piece. I live near a farm that raises goats. I love to watch them play. I keep telling my husband we need a goat at our house. The goat could earn its keep by keeping our grass down. Since I can’t sell him on the idea, this is my goat keeping the grass mowed down.

Hi Joy,
Well, it is Nov 1st here, so I have probably missed the deadline for October, but maybe it is still October where you are!

I had resigned myself to missing this prompt as well as last month, but I have been making a few samples of projects for the sewing day with the Guides and Brownies in January, and… Lo and behold, there on my table is a piece of stripe with some brown, and a strip of blue with 2, yes 2, French cats. Was meant to be, and now a hour or so later, here is a placemat.

We are offering the girls a tote bag, a drawstring bag, a placemat, a cushion cover, a coin purse and a small stuffed heart  , and will have “kits” ready for those who want to sign up.

Trust you are well, haven’t even had time lately to read any blogs, will catch up as soon as I get a breather.

Hello Joy,
Hope you are well. I enjoyed the challenge this month for two reasons.
First I have always loved the little appliqué baskets, had a thought or two about doing lots for a quilt.
Second we have a new lady at our group who didn’t know quilt-as-you-go so I used the placemat to demonstrate the technique for her.

I think my attempt at needle turn appliqué for the basket was not stellar, it’s rather uneven and has a pointy bit on the base. Of course if I set out to do 50 or 500 one would think the repetition would improve skills, “practice makes perfect”, and with lots to look at one would not be concentrating on each little bit of one basket! Maybe a different type of appliqué could be the way to go too.

Hello Joy,

I found this challenge to be a real joy to complete.

Firstly, my granddaughter was staying for the school holidays.

Secondly, I had just completed a group project using butterfly fabrics and had scraps on the table.  Here is that project:

What became of the scraps, Jane???

So I had enough of the background/ lining fabric to do the back of the placemat challenge, and I cut a big beautiful butterfly from the blue scraps:

My granddaughter joined in and we cut lots of little butterflies from all sorts of scraps (one was a fat quarter ). Avi decided she wanted all her butterflies on a dark green “floral” fabric to make a cushion cover. She took hers home and I don’t have a pic .

I had an aqua fabric with white flowers so put all my cutouts on it- batting, quilting - missing all the butterflies- and binding:

I think it may go home with Avi after the next school holidays.

Hello Joy,
I hope your health has been better lately, and also that you aren’t feeling hemmed in by the new neighbourhood popping up around you.
This month almost on the top of my scraps were the blue nautical fabric and the white sashing fabric - exact amounts of both!

Here is her entry:

The blue waves around the border took just 3 seconds to find…. So plenty of blue and plenty of water, - but it’s supposed to be watermelon!
So a watermelon binding- including the black seeds !!
Someone will love it when it makes its way to Meals on Wheels.
Hoping your summer is lovely, we are heading into winter.

The Guest Blogger(s) - Vol. 52 - Jane's YELLOW Umbrella?!

Welcome to another edition of The Guest Blogger(s)!!  I returned home from a trip to New England to find an email from Jane in Australia last week.  She has completed her entry for the April TABLE SCRAPS Challenge.

This is what she wrote...

Hi Joy,
A block is a finished item if that is what is requested yes?

In 1975 the United Nations designated 8th March as International Women’s Day, with the themes of Equality, Development and Peace. The colours chosen were purple, green and white. A Queensland quilter (probably more than one) has decided to have 50 quilts made by the 50th anniversary of the founding date, and has invited quilters to send in 10 1/2” blocks made with only those colours.

Concerning her entry...

I have several  other blocks ready, but the idea of an umbrella- shelter from the storms of life- seemed appropriate. Obviously I could not include yellow  but more necessary for the block to be correct (and the umbrella handle is a verrry dark green).

I hope this is ok for my Table Scraps entry for this month - they really were all scraps except I cut the white background. Love wandering around the blogosphere but don’t think I will ever dip my actual toes in the actual water - thanks for posting for me.

Have been following your quick weekly projects. Well done!

Concerning her entry...

Birds in the air, Dove in the window, Turkey tracks, Goose in the pond, Flying geese...ahh maybe I still have some scraps of flying geese. Yes!

And there are some tiny purple triangles on them too. Added some purple background- ohh, pictures look pink. More pics -  still definitely on the red side of purple instead of the blue side, but it is purple.

When I inquired as to the size of her project, the following response was returned...

I guess it is a mini quilt or a mug mat - I really don’t care what you call it, but it is too small for a placemat this month. I was just pleased to find the scraps and complete the challenge.

Welcome to another edition of The Guest Blogger(s)!!  This is the first month for the 2024 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge.  I am pleased to announce the return of Jane from Australia to our list of participants!

Here she is with news from "Down Under"...

Hello Joy,
Thought I would catch up with you again and ask if I can be part of the Table Scraps challenge again. Unfortunately I still don’t have a blog and would need to send you a pic to post for me each month, or when I can make it.
I have been checking your blog weekly and so am aware of your doings, especially all the journaling you are delving into.
I have been extremely busy as our group staged a quilt show last September. We currently have 42 peeps, but of course some were travelling and others not in good health, but we still did amazingly well.
We had almost 140 quilts hanging, had 3 traders in attendance, served lunch and teas, sold raffle tickets, operated our own trading table and did the white gloves bit over 2 days.

Our goals were - to put on a great quilt show, to have fun, and to not have a financial disaster. We checked all the boxes! Over the 2 days we had 700 visitors who were very happy, and have been able to make donations to one major charity and five community groups.

About her challenge participation...

This year I am going through many of the ways to finish the edges of a quilt, and will be showing one method each month. I have decided to finish a placemat each month - much more achievable than a quilt, and thought I might try to pull in the RSC colour and your challenge if at all possible.

Concerning her entry...

We live in Queensland which is tropical/ subtropical (it’s a very large area) so we never see snow here. I thought these pinwheel/scrolls were the closest to snowflakes, and they have green!

If you are too busy to do a post for me, I completely understand, but will attach a pic of my placemat in the hopes that you can use it. (Should have straightened it on the mat!)

Welcome to another edition of The Guest Blogger(s) here at The Joyful Quilter!!  I'm here to share the ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge project that Robobeagle posted over on Ravelry the other day.  She posts it there because she doesn't have a blog and then I bring it to you.  It works that way or with an email and I would be pleased to share YOUR project, too.

Robobeagle had this to say:

I made a “placemat” for the Table Scraps challenge yesterday. I have been making disappearing HSTs and was tired of seeing all the points that don’t quite match because I apparently can’t consistently sew a straight line or cut exactly at 2” or whatever. The blocks are pretty, and I doubt if the eventual recipient will care. So, I switched gears and did some crumb piecing. I ended up with an extra block/slab/whatever that may become a zipper bag or wait for other inspiration.

These are from my orange, but not specifically Halloween fabrics. The little bursts of color for the most part are from triangles cut off another strip pieced project. F = “fun” and “finished (in one day)”, and the wavy quilting “lines” are the L. It’s about 13 x 17. I used variegated cotton petite 50 thread for the top, and a variegated green sewing thread in the bobbin.

The Guest Blogger(s) - Vol.47 - Sandra's Nifty Yellow Notions Pouch

And PURPLE, too!!  :o))

Welcome to another edition of the Guest Blogger(s) here at The Joyful Quilter!!  Today, I'm here to share the ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge project that Sandra posted over on Ravelry yesterday.  She posts it there because she doesn't have a blog and then I bring it to you.  It works that way or with an email.

Y and/or N were the letter prompts for April, Sandra said the following...

I made a Nifty Notions pouch using some Yellow and Purple scraps with a Purple lining. The floral is quilted with 1” lines and outline quilting for the hexie flower. It measures 11” x 8” which is perfect for larger items like rulers, stitch holders, gauges, scissors, notebook etc.

Here’s my entry for the Table Scraps Challenge, March:

I made a placemat in greens (the camera washed them out a bit), using scraps with Bugs. The colour of the strips surrounding the bugs fabric is called Uguisucha, a dark browny green, hex 5C4827, RGB 92 72 39. I even found a piece of dark green tonal big enough for the backing, and two leftover pink binding scraps. This was fun.

I was going to skip this month's Table Scraps challenge (pumpkin/blue) as I didn't have an idea.  So, I started making 18" doll quilts for foster kids gifting this holiday season.  After doing 3 of them, I realized this one was blue:

I was running out of the month to work on my August "Orange" challenge.  Had different ideas I wanted to try but decided to do some improv quilting.  I put all of my oranges into a bag, pulled a piece out & sewed.  I still need to quilt this.  This is what I have so far:

In the nick of time, I finished my August Table Scraps Challenge - Orange (embroidery was an option that I didn’t have time for).
