Kitchen Stitchin' Blog Hop - Day 2 - My STOP on the Hop!!

Welcome to Day 2 of In the Kitchen Stitchin' Blog Hop!!  Our hostess is Carla @ Creatin' in the Sticks.  I signed up as soon as I heard!  I've enjoyed participating in a number of her Blog Hops over the last several years.  This one sounded like a challenge!

Carla's project instructions were as follows...

Create something inspired by the kitchen.
It can be pot holders, tea towels, coasters, placemats, table runners, mug rugs, or even a toaster cover.
It's your interpretation of a kitchen project.
Maybe a quilt with kitchen gadgets or a color in your kitchen that inspires you.
Anything kitchen.  You decide.

Right away I had two ideas about what to make.  Let's see which one of them won out...

The easy route?  That would be a Quilted Instant Pot Cozy.

The challenging project?  A long overdue exchange gift for my friend Belindybe.  She has a habit of requesting projects which stretch my comfort zone in one way or another.  Our exchange for 2020 hasn't been forgotten, but it also still hasn't been made.  :o((

I got a wake up call from Carla one week ahead of the Blog Hop.  Had I started my project?  NO!!! Time to get busy...

SEW...

Finally, I faced the challenge of turning these bits...

... Into flower petals:

It took some time to arrange them...

... And rearrange them with a couple new petals:

Eventually, I hit on a pleasing design...

... Then I removed the petals to assemble the background and replace the flower for stitching:

The backing was also chosen at this stage of the game:

Layering with batting came next...

... Which was followed by quilting...

... Quilting...

... And MORE quilting:

Side one is complete, but I forgot to take a progress photo:

What about the HOT part, Joyful???

Here's the condensed version.  The quilting...

... And the finishing:

Before sewing around the perimeter of the hot pad and turning it right side out, I added a THIRD layer of cotton batting just to be sure surfaces were protected from hot pots and/or pans.  I have a yard of Insul-Bright lost somewhere in my studio.  I guess I will need to make more hot pads (or some bowl cozies) when I finally locate it!  Sigh...

At long last, this gift was complete...

Why I let this project grow to be such a scary thing is beyond me!  It's embarrassing that I allowed it to paralyze me for such a long time, when the reality was not terrible, at all.  Many apologies to dear, sweet Belinda, who was SEW patient with me (and probably gave up all hope of EVER getting her swap gift!)

What about the prize giveaway, Joyful???

Yep!  I haven't forgotten.  For those of you who are new here, it is my habit to make something to share with one lucky winner when I participate in a Blog Hop.  This time is no different.

What do we get?  What do we get???

This time, I'm offering a custom made Mug Rug or Quilted Thread Catcher to the winner.  Your choice of color with my choice of design.  To enter the prize drawing just leave me a comment telling me about your favorite recipe.  It can be any category: appetizer, main dish, side dish, drinks, or desserts!  I'll choose the recipe that sounds the most interesting to me from the comments left prior to 9:00 PM  on Tuesday, April 27th.

The drawing is CLOSED!!!

You MUST leave your email address, if it's not included on your Blogger account, as I will contact the winner via email.

This post would not be complete without...

Sending out a BIG thank you to Needleb for her design advice along the way to a completed project.  Thanks, B!!  I appreciate the suggestions you made when my machine was acting up on Day Three and the fact that you didn't laugh too hard at this blooper moment late in the evening of Day Two of the construction process:

REMINDER:  Who could believe it's already the LAST weekend of the month???  The April 2021 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge is THIS WEEKEND!!!  Anyone with a runner, topper, mug rug, etc. is invited to join in the Link Party.

  4. It came out so nice. Great job. I have a UFO box that contains some of those types of projects, the ones where they are a bit overwhelming. I think I will use you as incentive to tackle at least one in the next couple of weeks. I'd love to be in your drawing, I'd choose Thread Catcher. One of my favorite recipes came from a hand out at my local food store. It's Crunchy Pea Salad. It contains peas, peanuts, crasins, bacon and green onions mixed with Valdalia onion salad dressing. The hardest part in making it is rounding up the ingredients.

  5. You did it! The design is gorgeous, and I think that was a great idea to follow the lines in the fabric for the quilting. She will love it! My favorite appetizer recipe: Stuffed Mushrooms. Brown 1 lb. breakfast sausage, add an 8-oz brick of cream cheese, then fill
a couple of lbs. of mushroom caps and bake for 20 minutes. Your mouth will thank you!!

  6. I appreciate the quilting tips. The back is almost as interesting as the front. And yes, I am glad to see that I am not the only one familiar with Jack (the ripper.)

  7. What a beautiful design! I think we all have projects we're afraid to tackle and then find out (maybe) they weren't so bad after all. My favorite recipe is my Lasagna recipe--the noodles aren't cooked and most of the sauce is a can or jar of pasta sauce--quick and easy. If my name is chosen, I'd prefer a mug rug. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Such a beautiful design. Thank you for sharing. I have so many favorite recipes! So instead of me choosing, I asked my daughter what her favorite thing is that I make and she said my "other Power Muffins." They are made with protein pancake mix, banana, and basic baking ingredients and only contain 1/4 c sugar which I love. My daughter loves having them in her lunch box for school and they freeze amazingly.

  9. The hot mat looks great! You’ve stitched a pretty design and the back looks just as great. I’m so great at just getting in and playing, BUT when it becomes a “have to make”, I turn into a huge procrastinator and blow the project way out of proportion in my head. Then when done, just like you, I wonder what was such a big deal.

  14. The Hot Pad turned out beautifully! Almost too pretty to set a pot on! My favorite recipe these days, is whatever is easy. A small pork loin and a can of green enchilada sauce in the crock pot! Not exactly a recipe!!!

  15. What a beautiful design on your hot pad and that quilting is gorgeous.

  16. The hot pad is a real beauty, Joy! I understand your response to the project. These things can just stop us in our tracks then fester in our minds until every bit of the project is blown out of proportion. My LQS owner, Vicki, always says, "this isn't for Paducah", which helps me get over the paralysis and mutterings.
Mom's homemade spaghetti sauce and meatballs is my all-time favorite. I eventually learned to make this well enough that it became the favorite of my children, too.

  20. Now, if you're really motivated....a tea towel and a full set of napkins would be beautiful in this design! JK! It really is a pretty pattern and one I'd love to play with. Your words remind me of a quote: Fear can have a voice, but don't let it have a voice. I try to remember that one when I'm held back by fear. Thanks for the reminder to link up this weekend on the Table Scraps challenge! Yikes!

  28. You did it and it came out great! Now.... can you work on adding more hours in the week so I might have a chance to finish hand quilting the table scrap challenge? Recipe Bruschetta and Zucchini pasta - I made a version of this for lunch without the pasta and chicken. My excuse - I had zucchini, tomato and fresh basil in the garden! It was yummy. link here https://www.pamperedchef.com/recipe/Main+Dishes/Grill+Pan/Bruschetta+%26+Zucchini+Pasta/1125680

  33. That turned out really pretty, Joy. Almost a shame to put anything on it but, since it's practical, we will! Ha! My go-to recipe would have to be Chicken Paprikash. It's super simple since I found the recipe decades ago on the back of the Heinz Chicken Gravy jar. My husband's meal-of-choice for his birthday and every day in between!

  37. Hi
I certainly have enjoyed browsing through your blog posts. How generous of you to have a give-away- I'm IN! I have a sweet tooth so my recipe is going to be a dessert. Easy Lemon Pie
for the crust i throw store bought butter biscuits/cookies into my foodprocessor (if it seems a bit too dry, throw in a little butter as well) Pat this mixture into your pie pan
    Filling:
    1 cup sugar
    1/2 cup lemon juice
    1 tablespoon lemon zest
    3 1/2 tablespoons corn starch
    1 cup milk
whisk this as you cook until it thickens Add 1/2 stick butter and 1 cup sour cream Pour into your prepared pie pan. Refrigerate for a few hours. If you want to be fancy- add a dollap of whipped cream and a garnish of a lemon slice when serving. Enjoy!

  41. Love the colors in your hot pad, Joy!! And your design is beautiful. I hope you find your InsulBright...but don't put it in those bowl cozies if you are going to put them in the microwave! You might have a melt down!!

  42. Your hot pad is gorgeous! My favorite recipe is one my mom used to make: Easy Cookies
1 box yellow cake mix (or any flavor)
    1 stick butter-softened
    2 eggs
    1 can coconut pecan frosting
Mix all ingredients together. Drop by tsp. onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 min.
Fast and easy, I still make these at Christmas my adult kids always want them.
