Quarantine Chronicles - Corona Style - Week 4

Welcome to another edition of Quarantine Chronicles!!  This is my response to our current global health crisis.  I keep hoping that mean virus will get tired of us and go away!  This is my record on life under a statewide Stay-at-Home order.  Knowing that I couldn't cope with a daily post...

Corona-cation.  Week Four.

This series began on as Thursday, March 19th.  It's hard to believe that nearly a month has gone by.  And yet another is hot on its heels!  Thanks for staying with me to see how the time unfolded.

On Day TWENTY-TWO, Thursday, April 9th...

I have to admit, for all my hoping, I wasn't QUITE on time for this week's ZoomBEE  meeting of my Weekly Quilt Group today!!!  :o((

It was surprising to see SEW many smiling faces this time around.  Lisa even joined us from England!  Unfortunately, a few people were unable to stay for both sessions, but Jean was able to capture this screen shot before some needed to leave:

Next on the agenda, a visit from SC Sue - who has been living in NC for the last 6 weeks:

After a quick project sharing (through the storm door), we went for a short walk (on opposite sides of the street) and then visited some more upon our return (at a minimum of 6 feet apart).  It was SEW good to see her (for the first time since she's been up here!!)

This afternoon, I had trouble settling down to one project.  I flitted from one to the next (to the next.)  Some days are just like that!

On the coronavirus side of things... New York' number of of cases jumped 10,000 cases overnight!!  The state has more infected citizens that any other NATION in the world!!!  NC, on the other hand, has only 3,690 cases and 69 residents have died (as of 11:45 this morning.)  Yesterday, Guilford county reported its 8th COVID-19 death, the most in any North Carolina county.  It has seen 125 cases.

Some of the major meat processing plants are beginning to shut down, as employees are getting infected with COVID-19.  Reports suggest that consumers shouldn't notice a shortage, as restaurant supplies are now selling to retailers.  Let's hope the source is correct about that!

Day TWENTY-THREE, Friday, April 10th...

The latest numbers from our county came in at 98 cases of COVID-19.  The hotspot seems to be a nursing home right near the Durham County line.  It's a facility that I believed sat in the neighboring county, but apparently not.

This is morning, I was able to join our ZoomKnit meet-up.  I enjoyed seeing everyone and was please to be able to stay and chat longer this week.  Everyone showed off the projects they are working on, but for some reason, I neglected to project photos.

Here are the attendees...

Tracy - Gave a report about the wedding that was held at the venue near her house AFTER the stay-at-home order was put into place.  Not only the bride and groom with their parents, but there were FIVE bridesmaids, a DJ, THREE caterers, AND who-knows-how-many guests!  One of her neighbors called the cops (who came and broke up the party.  TWICE!  That wasn't the end of it, though:

Stacy - Joined us for breakfast and moved from room to room, in an effort to find better lighting.  Here she has just returned from breaking up a fight between her two "tween" boys who were arguing over a video game:

Cindy - Just as her phone started ringing.  She took the call and went out to the kitchen to chat with one of her family members:

Beth - Related the story of a broken furnace (?) and learning all kinds of information that she never wanted to know, as her husband worked to install a back-up battery on the unit outside:

Linda - Told us more about her daughter in NYC.  With foot traffic down because of New York's shelter-in-place order, the homeless people are becoming more aggressive in their panhandling.  The city feels much like a war zone:

Both Nicole and Hilary missed today's meeting.  :o((

But...

I left the meeting a few minutes early to begin working on a friend's quilt currently on the frame:

After spending some time on that, the majority of my afternoon was spent working on the blog post for yesterday's ZoomBEE meeting.  I didn't get much of a head start this week, so I have a LOT of work to do!

An update concerning coronavirus in Sweden was found in an article published in TIME yesterday.  The country has 9,141 confirmed cases and 793 deaths.  Even so, few restrictions have been place on its citizen.  I continue to hope that my old friends are safe and well.

Day TWENTY-FOUR, Saturday, April 11th...

After checking in with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this morning, I scanned some of the COVID-19 articles in my newsfeed.  Bad news, folks!  According to The Telegraph, South Korea reported yesterday that 91 patients thought to have been cleared of the virus have test positive, again.  That number is up 40 cases.  Some people who previously showed no signs of the disease were now exhibiting symptoms, while others still weren't.  They are currently conducting tests to see how patients are becoming reinfected and this, from a country who THOUGHT they had contained the virus.  They also reported 27 new cases on Friday.

Once I had released my POST and visited all of the RSC Quilters and had some lunch, I went up to spend some quality time with the quilt on my longarm:

Later, I made the mistake of checking the news, again. On the home front, Orange Co., North Carolina now has 141 confirmed cases and 2 deaths.  That's up from 98 cases yesterday.

Day TWENTY-FIVE, Sunday, April 12th...

Project QUILTING Quarantine 2020 Limited Edition...  The second prompt was revealed today.  Find the information for Florals Q.2 challenge HERE.

I also released a new Sew Some Love post.  Then, made the mistake of checking my newsfeed...

According to an article from BBC.com, the U.S. now has a higher death toll from coronavirus than Italy.  John Hopkins University's latest data shows more than 20,000 people have lost their lives to COVID-19 in America.

Day TWENTY-SIX, Monday, April 13th...

Today, I released a new Mail Call Monday post and Bonnie Hunter released the third step of UNITY: The Quiltville Sew-in-Place QAL and I still haven't begun.

... My goal is to come up with an abbreviated version of the Sew-in-Place UNITY QAL.  The resulting quilt will be something that (vaguely) resembles this segment of Bonnie's quilt:

More to come on this in a later post.  I've still got a few other projects that require some attention before embarking on this one.

Because...

As my friend Gayle @ Mangofeet blog commented:

Even stuck at home, you're a whirlwind of activity!

Today's coronavirus update... NC 4,880 cases, 100+ deaths. 195,000+ NY  cases,  10,000+ have died.

Day TWENTY-SEVEN, Tuesday, April 14th...

Is anyone else noticing time warps during your day?  I swear!  I sit down after breakfast and when I look up, it's 10 AM.  The same thing happens after lunch!  I sit down to do ONE THING on the computer and suddenly it's 2 PM.  It's quite an amazing and somewhat disturbing phenomena.

In the interim today, I enjoyed visiting with a friend.  Live and in person!!  (Yes.  I actually went out of the house for a socially distanced visit.)  It was the first time I've driven my car in 10 days (even if it WAS just around the corner!)  Before you ask, there's NO WAY that I could have walked.  You see, I gave her a bunch of flowers last month (?) and today she returned the favor by sharing three big shopping bags of plants (with their accompanying soil.)

I came home with...

Zucchini and Yellow Squash, Daylilies, Peonies and a Chrysanthemum.

Looks like I've got some work to do!!  Can you believe I forgot to take any photos?!?!  :o((

Day TWENTY-EIGHT, Wednesday, April 15th...

Grocery run?? Not this morning.  It has been 9 days since the last one!!  We're getting better about freezer diving to prolong the time between trips to the store.  DH has also been working up an online dry goods order and some necessary item.  He has a Friday pick-up scheduled (which will mean 11 days between shopping trips!)

Turns out my planting plans didn't work out.  I had to wait for the weather to warm up, as it was 42 degrees this morning.  Brr!

Unfortunately, that meant my newsfeed captured my attention.  Acording to FOX NEWS, a new study published by the CDC states that research indicates that SARS-CoV-2  aerosol could travel 13 feet in the air and live on shoes.  NOT good news!

After lunch, I planted.  (No exciting photos.)  This afternoon, I did some fun sewing to test out a background for my next mini quilt:

Thank you to Sandy @ Sew High for sharing some these fun pink fabrics with me!!

SEW...

There you have it.  I am still keeping busy.  And even without the alarm clock's buzz, I find that I often wake up early.  Right when (or even earlier than) it WOULD have rung (before all this coronavirus thing made staying at home the thing we did all day.  Every day.  Day after day.)

I am still trying to focus on being thankful for these extra hours in the studio.  I've got to tell you, though, I miss those nights when going out to eat was a viable option for dinner once in a while.  :o((

Until next time...
That's it for Week FOUR!!

  1. Whew! My days all seem the same, kind of like Groundhog's Day. I have found that quilting a little each day is helping me stay grounded. All of this mask making gets to a person. Stay safe. ~Jeanne

  3. Another productive week for you, Joy! Glad you got to have some virtual and "real" visits. You are such a people person. Way to go digging deep into your freezer. I finally left the house to get chicken feed yesterday (and got a grocery order while I was out.) Keep digging into those scraps!

  4. oy vey, when the food supply becomes infected. Only nearly 4000 people with the virus... it spreads like crazy before symptoms surface... if those thirty six hundred gave it to 5 people we're looking at lots more to come.

some countries actually shut down immediately and they are now getting a handle on it unlike us...

  5. Oh, Joy, looks like you are keeping busy! What did we do without Zoom? Our governor is actually doing a pretty good job, thank heavens, but I'm starting to go a little stir crazy. Did you know that garden centers will deliver? I can't wait!
