Quarantine Chronicles - COVID Nurse Quilt Project for Wake Med

Welcome to another edition of the Quarantine Chronicles!!  It's been quite some time since my last update.  Today, I'm here in conjunction with my Tidy-Up Tuesday post series because this is a wrap-up post for a small Quilt Drive that I recently helped with.  It was my way of responding to Sarah's appeal for quilts for our Hometown Heroes during this year's Hands2Help Comfort Quilt Challenge going on at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  There's still plenty of time for YOU to jump on board with H2H at the link provided above.

Here's what happened...

I got an email:

Hi Joy,
Hope your family and quilting friends are doing well.   I am in need of quilting help.  Our Carolina Arbors quilting group volunteered to make lap quilts for the COVID Unit Nurses at Wake Med because a members son was part of that group.  He said 30-40 people at first then came up with 53 which we thought we could handle.  Well today she got a call to tell her how many men were in the group and the number as grown to 73.  We were good at managing 53 but she is in a panic now that the number increased by 20 more.
I was wondering if any of your group or guild would like to contribute to this cause.  I would be happy to collect them.  Thanks for spreading the word.

To which I replied...

What size and style quilts are you looking for? Lap quilt is a bit of a general term, Karen. Members always ask for an appropriate size range. I will ask around for contributions for your cause.

My request went out...

I recently received an email from Karen @ G's Quilt and Craft Retreat in Hillsborough. Her Carolina Arbors quilt group volunteered to make lap quilts for the COVID nurses @ Wake Med because a member's son was part of that group.

He thought there were 30 - 40 people who would be receiving quilts. That number has since grown to 73 and they are in a panic. Karen wondered if any DOQ members might have any lap quilts to contribute to the cause. If so, you can get them to me and I will pass them along to Karen.

They had originally hoped to gather the quilts by March 1st, but with the increase in recipients, they will take the quilts whenever they can get them.  Simple patterns are just fine. Your quilts should measure in the range of 45 x 64 to 56 x 70 to suit adult females.

Please contact me, if you have an appropriately sized quilt to donate.

Thank you!

Then, the quilts and tops came rolling in...

A completed quilt from Ruth B:

These two quilts were contributed by Maggie S:

Candy provided these two quilts from Ruth S:

The quilts above were delivered and I collected the following...

Cheryl K. donated this quilt top:

These two completed quilts came from Diane H:

Reversible?!  Yep!  Side one shown above and side two below:

The following quilt tops were donated by Jean F. and quilted and bound by Karen G. and friends:

Then another quilter answered the call...

Gayle S, a COVID survivor who lost her husband to the virus, offered these two cheerful quilts:

I quilted this quilt from Cheryl K:

Unfortunately, these last three quilts didn't end up making their way to Wake Med.  They will be used for some other cause.

A note of thanks...

Karen dropped off Thank You notes which I distributed at our first In-Person meeting in a number of months.

Here's mine...

The quiltmakers and I greatly appreciated Karen's thoughtfulness and we were SEW happy to be able to contribute to the COVID Nurse Quilt Project for Wake Med!

A thank you from me, too...

I really do have THE BEST quilting friends.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to this local-ish call for quilts.  I also want to thank the DOQ for their willingness to step in with more quilts, if needed.

Quarantine Chronicles - Corona Style - Week 12

Welcome to another edition of Quarantine Chronicles!!  This post is my response to the ongoing global pandemic.  It's my record of staying Safe-at-Home.  We're nearing the middle of June. The country is stepping its way back to a new normal and the number of confirmed cases are on the rise.

Corona-cation.  Week Twelve.

This series began on as Thursday, March 19th.  Time is moving so quickly, even though each day seems as long as two!  Thanks for staying with me to see how the weeks are unfolding.

On Day SEVENTY, Wednesday, May 27th...

I released the last Quarantine Chronicles post.  That was 2 weeks ago and I'm still staying home for the most part.  Any errands consist of socially distanced visits with friends.  These typically take place outdoors (and still with a mask on.)

On Day EIGHTY-FOUR, Wednesday, June 10th...

My weekly Knit Group and Quilt Bee continue to meet via Zoom.

I am still perfectly OK with this.  For the most part.  I do have moments when I really WISH things were as they once were.  Before this global pandemic.  Happy and carefree.  Alas, that is NOT where we are in our history.

COVID-19 Update...

Our county has put in place MANDATORY face mask order.  The mandate includes indoor (specifically in stores) and outdoor situations when maintaining 6 feet of distance cannot be kept.  The requirement goes into effect on Friday at 5 PM and will run through August 31st.

The local, state, and national statistics?

Orange County has 388 confirmed cases.  252 recovered and 40 deaths.
North Carolina is currently at 30,777 confirmed cases with 18,860 of those recovering.  There have been 969 deaths related to COVID-19 in the state. The United States now has 2 million confirmed cases and nearly 113,000 people have died from the virus.

SEW...

There you have it.  I've survived another couple of weeks of this corona craziness!  The end of 12 weeks of staying home!!!  That's not likely to change anytime soon.  Even though we are firmly entrenched in Phase Two of re-opening the state, I don't feel safe out in public.  I'll be back with another update when there is more news to record.

Until next time...
Stay well and keep QUILTING!!!

Tutorial Tuesday - Make {Easy} Masks

Welcome to another edition of Tutorial Tuesday!!  I have tried a number of mask patterns and hadn't found one that worked for my family.  The shaped pattern that I tried didn't provide enough nose to chin height for DH (whom I have taken to calling Muppet Man when he tries on a mask.) One basically fell right off and the other practically suffocated him. This one (after adding an inch to the height) fit his face just right and didn't fog up his glasses.

Here's the YouTube LINK.  That provides the basic method of construction.

I know that there's not really a need for ANOTHER mask tutorial, but I needed to record the alterations I made, so the easiest way to remember (or be able to find them) is to post them here on the blog.

Sample masks cut at the size described in the video (with elastic INCORRECTLY cut at 6.5") inadvertently yielded two Preteen/Adult Extra Small masks:

In the photo below, I'm holding my ears back so the mask doesn't fly off my face:

Since that was a bit of a fail, I went on to make some adjustments...

The photo below shows DH's mask with DS1's mask beneath.  The photo doesn't give a clear picture of the 3/4" difference in height between the two:

This is me, measuring for ear loop adjustments:

Here is the mask that I made for DS2 at the 7.5" size:

I made these masks and dropped them off with a friend:

** A family of masks in three different sizes.

** Adult Large on the left and Adult Medium on the right.

** A progress shot of three Adult Small masks.  (Note the fold lines for the ear loops.)

My mask was cut at the 7.5" size:

That Mask Marathon led me to make ONE MORE in an extra large size today:

The photo above shows the magic of this style of mask.

** One single Adult Extra Large mask.

Positive Feedback from Tracy...

"Family loves the masks.  DH claimed the biggest one, and DS likes the blue one with plaid.  He tried it on and said, "Cool" - which is high praise from a 14 yo boy.\, especially when describing a mask!  DD says hers is so pretty that she will not wear the disposable one again!"

Yay!!  I will call that a success.  :o))

The stats for cutting...

The measurements in the video are in metric. They translate roughly to the following:
2 - 7" x 10" rectangle with 6.5" ear loops (suitable for preteens and extra small adults)
Mark 1.5" up from the seam allowance at the corners (I use a cut of corner as a template, after cutting the first one)

I have sized up the pattern, as follows...

7.5" x 10" for women and teens 7" ear loops (7.5?)
8" x 10" for men with 8" ear loops
8.5" x 10" for rounder faces with 9" ear loops

I was told to use 10" of elastic (tied) for ear loops and 12" (tied) for large sizes. I adapted that for 1/2" to 3/4" t-shirt strips cut 7.5" sewn together to form a ring and stretched to roll. That part is still a bit of trial and error. You probably need 8" (possibly more) for the larger sized mask.

The ear loops are tucked into the 1/2" channel pressed at the short sides of the rectangle.

The video calls for 3/8" seam allowance and then calls for trimming. I just used a 1/4" seam and didn't do any trimming.

Adding a nose wire...

I don't recall if the video shows a nose wire being inserted, but a nose wire goes a long way toward insuring proper fit of your cloth face mask. I do that AFTER pressing the fold lines. BEFORE sound any edge stitching!!  (Nose wires are cut 4.5" to 5" long.)  I just tuck the centered nose wire inside the mask, up close to the top edge.  Once I have it centered, I hold it in place and add a row of stitching to hold it in place.  I do my edge stitching then edge stitch the folds.

Consult the video for the rest of the finishing.  I will say that  in the pressing step, I simple "eyeball" a 1/2" fold along the sides for the ear loops.

I hope to add additional process photos with my next set of masks.  Drop me a comment, if you have any questions before that happens.

Until next time...
I'm off to make MORE masks!!

Project QUILTING - Quarantine Edition - Q.5

TRISH

What are the details for this week's challenge, Joyful???

Kim is giving Trish a break for this FINAL Quarantine Challenge (for now.) Here's what she had to say about this week's prompt... Q.5
The inspiration for the final Project QUILTING Quarantine Challenge is TRISH.  Kim had this to say:
Trish Frankland is the peanut butter to my jelly, my partner in crime … I mean quilting, she brings me down when I’m too far up and brings me up when I’m too far down.  Project QUILTING and my quilting world would not be the same without her. AND it’s her birthday on May 31st – the day these are due so I thought this would be a great week to be inspired by her!
If you don’t know Trish here are a few of her loves to inspire you –
  • Skulls
  • Typography
  • Indy 500
  • Motorcycles
  • Chickens
  • Vocabulary
  • Balancing Rock Piles
  • Art History
  • The “F” word
  • Music
  • Sparkles
With that list in mind...

I took a tour thru my fabric stash to see what I might have to work with.  I'm not gonna lie, right now, I've got NOTHING!!

Who wants to place bets on what I found???

Crickets?  (Meaning, still no idea WHAT this challenge will be.)

But...

As I poured over the list (for the THIRD time), I stopped at the word vocabulary.  Hmm...

Inspiration struck...

The question is HOW will I interpret my idea?!  Since my stash failed me, maybe my scrap bins will house something appropriate.  Skulls, typography, and music, maybe.  The "F" word?  Not in MY stash!!

I went in search of FREE fonts:

Q - Validity Script
U - Naughty Monster
I - Do It With Love
L - Vintage Letterpress
T - Waltograph

I printed the letters out and decided they were too small, so DH sized them up for me (twice) using a scanned copy and his snippet tool.  Finally, I cut out the letters:

... And aligned them like my original drawing:

Next came the fun part!  Choosing fabric scraps:

Some adjustments were made:

Once that was done, I pulled out my scraps of Steam-a-seam Lite 2 and rough cut so they were bigger than the letters, but smaller than the fabric:

After trimming... Fused first side and cut out the letters (again) and played with the word alignment.  I present my Q.5 challenge piece, ready for fusing:

... And fused to the background:

SEW...

What are the chances that the FIRST piece of batting that I pick up would be the EXACT size that I needed for this piece?!  Pretty incredible, huh:

With threads chosen...

... I stitched down each of the letters:

QUILT - a verb for making friends:

You'll notice in the photo above, I quilted in the phrase.

I decided the piece didn't require further quilting.  It was time to choose a binding.  I have a small stash of rainbow scraps that I bought at this year's Quilt Guild Silent Auction. I chose one of those and cut the necessary strips:

I'm really hoping I'll have time to finish this in the morning!  The clock is ticking. T minus 14 hours and counting, but I'm too tired to continue.

OK, OK.  Back to the finishing....

With fresh eyes (only TWO HOURS before the deadline!) and a renewed sense of enthusiasm, I prepared the binding, stitched it on and then REMEMBERED the two steps that I almost forgot!!

What's that, Joyful!!!

My label and the corner hanging system, that's what.  That would be disastrous since this is meant to be a wall hanging AND a gift.  Don't you think?  I added those and moved on to the binding:

And...

(With 45 minutes to spare) My Q.5 challenge is complete:

The quilt measures 8" tall x 12.5" wide.

Why did you participate this time???

If you know me, you know there is ALWAYS a reason that I participate in these challenges.  This time??  The challenge provided me with a housewarming gift for a dear friend who moved into a new house a few months ago.

Here's a closer look...

... And a better look at the "writing":

I hope she likes it!!

Off to link-up with the Challenge...

The NEW Blogger was having some issues, so finishing my post was not as easy as it sometimes is.  I'm off to link-up with only 30 minutes to go.  Yikes!  Nothing like the last minute to get something done.

Thank you to Kim and Trish for continuing to challenge our creativity during our Coronacation.  I really appreciate the time and effort you take to bring this event to us.  It was a nice diversion, as we waited for our country to re-open.  Stay safe out there!!

Quarantine Chronicles - Corona Style - Week 10

Welcome to another edition of Quarantine Chronicles!!  This post is my response to the ongoing pandemic.  It's my record of the Lockdown Life.  We're nearly at the end of May.  It doesn't seem possible!  Can you believe we've been at this whole Stay-at-Home order thing for TEN weeks???  How did THAT happen?!?!  At least, I've got my quilting to keep me company!  Knowing that I couldn't cope with a daily post...

Corona-cation.  Week Ten.

This series began on as Thursday, March 19th.  Time is moving so quickly, even though each day seems as long as two!  Thanks for staying with me to see how the weeks are unfolding.

On Day SIXTY-FOUR, Thursday, May 21st...

It's my favorite day of the week!  ZoomBEE met this morning:

Jean provided the group photo shown above.  It's our weekly record of those who were in attendance.

Disaster struck!!  I made a rookie mistake.  After FOUR years on the longarm?!  Working thru the issue and hoping to be back up and running soon.  :o((

Day SIXTY-FIVE, Friday, May 22nd...

ZoomKNIT this morning.  You guessed it!  I was late...  Again!  Six  Seven members were in attendance...

This is what the others saw when I was on the screen...

... And Tracy taught me how to make it so that everyone was there at the same time:

Stacy:

Beth:

Tracy:

Cindy:

Linda:

And, somewhat late in the game, Nicole joined us:

I guess that means it's time for another group picture:

I released a new Design Floor Friday post!!  Here's a preview:

Tonight starts Phase 2 of North Carolina's reopening.  That doesn't really change anything for me.  I'm still staying home the majority of the time.

Day SIXTY-SIX, Saturday, May 23rd...

This morning, I linked-up with Angela and the RSC Quilters for ScrapHappy Saturday.  This evening?  I did speed piecing on a special birthday gift.

Day SIXTY-SEVEN, Sunday, May 24th...

Here is a LINK to the final challenge of Project QUILTING Quarantine Edition that was issued this afternoon.  I started working up an idea and then finished up a gift that I've been working on.  (Sorry, Belinda!  It's not yours.  YET!!)

Day SIXTY-EIGHT, Monday, May 25th...

Bonnie Hunter's Unity Sew-At- Home QAL is complete.  The final step was released last week.  Let's make a start, shall we?

I would LOVE to, but...

Look who I ran into at the coffee shop:

It's Memorial Day and I made plans to meet-up for the Great Toilet Paper Exchange!!!

Day SIXTY-NINE, Tuesday, May 26th...

According to an article in today's News & Observer, due to the ongoing problem of wipes, facial tissues, paper towels, and wash rags found clogging pumps in the water system, our town is currently giving away Eco-Wise 2-ply toilet paper to any water & sewer customer FREE of charge.

I tried a new-to-me mask pattern tonight:

Thanks to my friend Graylagran for sending me the video link:

The exterior fabric is from another friend's gifted scrap bag:

The interior is scraps from one T-Quilt or another:

I made some incorrect assumptions about the pattern and wrote down the wrong measurement for the elastic.  This is me.  Holding my ears back so the mask doesn't pop off my face:

I'm DEFINITELY trying this one, again!  I now know to mark the corners from the seam line NOT from the edge of the piece.  I also wrote down the correct elastic measurement AND made a note to include the nose wire BEFORE top stitching the pre-shaped mask closed.  Speaking of elastic... Thank you to Sandy @ Sew High blog for sharing some of her spool with me.

Day SEVENTY, Wednesday, May 27th...

Last night, I came across this recent article about states with uncontrolled instances of the novel coronavirus.  North Carolina is on that list (and we're in Phase Two of re-opening.)  Combine these two things and you've got the recipe for a perfect storm.  YIKES!!

I started on my fourth cloth face mask last night.

But...

I forgot to take a photo.  Making the changes that I noted and ended up with this:

The exterior is a recycled J. Crew shirt that I've used several times during the last month or so:

The interior is another off-cut shirt from one of my T-Quilts:

SEW...

There you have it.  I've survived another week of this corona craziness!  The end of 10 weeks of staying home!!!  I'm going to continue staying home, however, this may be the last Quarantine Chronicles post for a while, as North Carolina has gone into Phase Two of re-opening the state.  I'm feeling the need to stop (or at least pause) the series.  Perhaps, I'll take it to a monthly post until things are fully back to normal.  I'm not sure.

Until next time...
Stay well and keep QUILTING!!!
