Mail Call Monday - Special Delivery

TWINS!!!

Welcome to another edition of Mail Call Monday!!  I am here to tell you about something that was delivered to my house while I was at Quilt Bee this month.

The story of the ailing Pfaff...

If you have been reading along, you may recall that my trusty Pfaff "piecing machine" has been "under the weather" for several months.  It was in the shop 3 times during the last 3 months of 2019.  The ultimate diagnosis was NOT good!!

At the auction...

eBay, that is.  DS1 started checking online to see what he could find.  There had been several sales of the identical machine.  Auctions are tricky, though.  One must be careful about bids.

Fast forward a couple of weeks...

A large box arrived on my front porch:

What's inside the box, Joyful???

Bubble wrap...

... A whole LOT of packing peanuts...

Beneath it all???

Lo and behold, he had ordered a new-to-me Pfaff sewing machine:

Above, you see that DS1 couldn't WAIT to take it out of the box and put it through its paces.  Below, you see the shell of my "new" machine!  The thread path was somewhat disrupted by the face plate, so some adjustments were necessary:

He pronounced this board to look good:

I saw more of this machine than I ever wanted to!  Put those panels back on the poor dear:

He checked the belt since everything ELSE on the top side had been exposed and given a thorough once over:

The review of the "new" machine...

We are still in the bonding phase of our relationship.

It's quieter than my old machine.  The former owner was obviously a garment sewer, as evidenced by the worn buttonhole button and one of the construction stitches.  (Think overlock.)

The tension seems to be a bit finicky, but nothing that a quick "reboot" couldn't take care of.

In the week since it's been up and running, we've made...

One String block for Covered in Love:

One Project QUILTING quilt:

And...

A project (or two) for my STOP on the Winter Blues Blog Hop:

Let's hear it for my replacement Pfaff Tiptronic 2030, circa 1999:

I think we are well on our way to developing a good rapport!!

What ever happened to the old machine, Joyful???

Eventually, I made my way to Raleigh to retrieve Old Faithful.  DS1 had a grand time opening up the machine to see for himself what was going on...

The first thing he found was a piece (the tall notched black one right in front of his thumb) on the computer board that was barely hanging on!  He soldered that right up:

Then, he took a look at the guts of the machine:

There's a warn bearing somewhere on the right in the photo below:

Here, he was taking a look at the hook race assembly:

Ultimately...

It was determined that is not the only source of the "crunchy" noise it's making.  The belt was found to be worn, but probably still has a lot of mileage left on it.  The old machine got put back together:

It will now stand ready for travel at a moment's notice (until it can no longer sew.)  That fact makes me supremely happy, as it was always such a pain to disassemble my sewing space each time I headed out to quilt with friends.  (And, if you know me, you KNOW that I do this several times each month.)

I'll just need to pack EAR PLUGS in my bag!!!  :P

Until next time...
Color me SEW happy!!!

  2. LOVE that your son knew and found you a new sewing machine! A well raised boy! Double impressed he was able to dissect the machine and figure things out and fix it. I think you have a new repairman =)

  3. My DH peered closely at all of the photos of your Pfaff guts. Now he's grateful that my Juki has many fewer and smaller circuit boards! I'm glad you have a new machine to sew quietly with at home, and Ms. Crunchy can go on the road :)
