ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC20 - Week 33

Welcome to Week 33 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week included bits of PURPLE along the way.  It's the Color of the Month for the RSC and I like to quilt along, if I can.

It started like this...

SUNDAY - EARTHQUAKE!!!  In North Carolina?!

I was sitting in my "reading chair" minding my own business, enjoying my morning cup of tea.  The next thing I know, it felt like someone had bumped into my chair.  Hard!

The only problem with that theory is that my chair.  Is in a CORNER and it's impossible for someone to be behind it bumping into it.  (I checked to make sure.)  DH was across the room thinking I'd lost my mind.  From where he was sitting, he felt nothing.

Next, I heard a thump and felt another bump.  Not long after, I got a text from DS1 upstairs... "Earthquake?"

Once the excitement wore off, I went about my day.  Then I remembered that I forgot to tell you about the fabric that I delivered to a friend yesterday afternoon.  She is on a mission to finish a special quilt in a week:

This will be the quilt's back.

This afternoon, I released a new Sew Some Love post.  Click HERE to see what that was about.

MONDAY - Today, I released a new Mini Monday post.  These PURPLE scraps MIGHT have been involved:

The saga of an experimental block began with cutting out the pieces and will progress throughout the week:

And a PURPLE Pineapple, too!

Late in day, I got an email from LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color.  She proposed an impromptu Zoom call to get an opinion on her current project, but after three tries to get a photo, I got a little silly:

TUESDAY - It was the last day before teachers head back to (virtual) school.  I met my friend Tracy for coffee and conversation.  What do you know?!  Hilary was there, too:

After that inside photo was taken, we headed outside for a lovely morning of knitting:

Before we go any further, it's celebration time!  I finished the sock that I have been (not) knitting on for TWO YEARS.  The only thing that remains is weaving in the ends:

Later in the day, The Block Experiment ended like this:

Finished up at 5" somehow.  What?!  This was SUPPOSED to measure 4.5 inches.

I also released a special Tutorial Tuesday post.  If you liked Tiffany's Magic Stars, you will NOT want to miss this!!

WEDNESDAY - Yesterday's story wasn't the END of the story.  You see, it's all Kathy's fault!!

That would be Kathy @ Kathy's Quilts.  Without seeing her post (linked to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge on Saturday), none of this would have happened.  She posted this LINK from Julie K Quilts.  (It's a two-year-old link, but that's when Kathy started making her quilt.)  The week before, she had told her readers how to prepare for their 14 week adventure.

Today, I was a lump for most of the day and then I zoomed with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

I showed her the scraps that I chose for the project that I am planning for the Hello Fall Blog Hop which will be hosted over on Carla's Creatin' in the Sticks blog in late September:

THURSDAY - ZoomBEE this morning.  These lovely quilters join in to share what they have (or haven't) been working on:

Mistakes were made.  (Take another look at the Log Cabin photo above.)  All in all, That didn't matter one bit!  I had planned to add the resulting PURPLE block to my Tiny Tuesday stash.  Those blocks measure 5 inches, as well.  This is not the first time I've had trouble with a Log Cabin block turning out the way I expect it to.

See what I mean?  I present Exhibit A:

A look at a single block.

Energized by my quilter friends, here's what I spent the afternoon working on.  You get a glimpse of the PURPLE portion of my friend's gorgeous quilt:

FRIDAY - (Edited to add that...) ZoomKNIT happened with the following friends in attendance:

Back to this week's unfolding tale.  The moral of the story?  Apparently, I just can't Log Cabin:

One quarter of my first Log Cabin quilt.

My label might give a clearer picture of the problem.

This afternoon was spent putting in (and taking out) more stitches on my friend's quilt and tonight DH brought home a PURPLE vacuum cleaner to make all of my RSC friends jealous:

Silly, man!!  Doesn't he KNOW we're too busy quilting?!?!

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Check out all of the pleasingly PURPLE scrap projects over on Angela's So Scrappy blog.

Here's the end of this week's Log Cabin adventure series...

The quilt that I named Cats in the Cabin.  It was my second or third quilt I'd ever made:

I had planned for the cats to be at the center of the blocks, but got the color placement wrong.  Oops!

Until next time...

Scrap SEW safely!!

  1. Looks like a busy week I’m glad you are okay after the earthquake. We had one earlier this year in Utah. I was in the rocking chair feeding the baby. So the earth was shaking one way and my chair was rocking the other. It was twice the movement for me. But thankfully we were all okay and it wasn’t too strong where I live.

  2. You're not the only one who is 'log cabin challenged'.. the only way I can successfully make one is by paper piecing. I took an online class from Marti Michelle and even bought her specialty rulers... still can't make a log cabin without paper piecing.

  3. I don't think I've ever made a 'real' log cabin... I prefer the wonky ones.... that way I can honestly say - it is supposed to look like that! I think your bottom log cabin looks great. Glad there was no damage from the earthquake.

  10. My son didn't feel the earthquake but his wife did - just like you guys! I want to know if that sock you finished has a mate or if you need a little more time to make another one.;) ~Jeanne

  11. I thought I was the only one who couldn't make a log cabin block. I have finally mastered the light side/dark side concept, but I forget about which direction I need to go and where I want to end up.

  12. You had a pretty good week on the stitching front, even with the log cabin block angst. Hope this week is as good.

  14. You have had a busy week working with purple! I haven’t had a chance to break out my purple scraps yet! Maybe today. Log cabin is the 1st quilt I made way back in 1996!

  15. It must be that you're so much fun, the reason I don't look awful in pictures!!! It's almost shocking you had an earthquake.
There you are going along minding your own business...

  16. My log cabins end up wonky or the wrong size, too. Something about going around and around and having lots of seams in a block makes the gremlin sneak in :)
