Sew Some Love Sunday - LWR Instructions

Welcome to another edition of Sew Some Love Sunday!!  Last week, I posted about the need to rebuild the supply of quilts for the Lutheran World Relief (LWR).  They were obliterated in the recent explosion in Beirut, Lebanon.  In that POST, I told you that I would be researching further into what the LWR was looking for.

This week, I've got some news to share...

Special thanks to Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting for providing the following Instructions LINK to a list of guidelines for making Lutheran World Relief quilts!!  The term "quilt" is used loosely.  Knit or crocheted afghans are also welcome.

If you scroll down the page linked above, you will see a button marked Mission Quilts.  More specific instructions are available for download at this LINK.

Here is a summary of the exclusions...

NO religious symbols or messages.  (Crosses, Star of David, etc.)

Secular symbols are acceptable.  (Rabbits, eggs, and poinsettias.)

NO U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage.

What YOU can do to help???  A review...

Quilts or tops should measure approximately 60 x 80 inches.  That can be something as simple as 10.5" squares sewn in a 6 x 8 layout.  That's only 48 squares of fabric!

I don't have TIME to sew for LWR, Joyful!!!

No worries!  I'll arrange the sewing for you.  All you have to do is cut and mail the 48 - 10.5" squares needed to make each Mission Quilt!!  I will have my minions do the rest find another quilter to do the sewing.  I might even do it for you, myself!  :o))

NOTE:  Should you choose to spearhead a collection effort in your area, here is a LINK to packaging information.

Does this humanitarian effort speak to YOU???

If so, leave a comment below.  (Please be sure to include your EMAIL ADDRESS, if you are a No Reply blogger!!)  I will respond to each comment via email.  All donations will be featured here on the blog.

**  My hope would be to wrap up this collection by the end of the year, so in order to allow time for your donations to be processed, please act now.

Thank you for your consideration.  I appreciate your part in helping me help others.

And because every post needs a quilt photo...

This is the quilt that Needleb and I collaborated on for a friend.  She provided the top, quilting and binding.  I provided the backing fabric, moral support, and delivered the well-received quilt this morning.

Until next time...

Sew Some Love!!!

  2. Our local hospital has put in a request for more Hospice quilts for Fall so I will be busy stitching them together. I will however take a break from that this weekend and cut some sets of 48 squares for you. I will send them out early next week. Thanks for sharing this need.

  3. Thank you for the notice about LWR's continuing efforts in the Middle East and in particular Lebanon. I'll check out the LWR site. I'd be happy to cut squares and send them to you.

  4. I think I'd be able to crank out a quilt for LWR before the year's end. Or at least cut squares and/or make a top? 80 inches is pretty big for me to machine quilt, but I might try tying it. Forgive all this thinking-out-loud blather, count me in, one way or another. :)

  6. Put me on your list to help, please! I'd be happy to send top, backing and binding to someone who can do the quilting. I'll commit to at least one, probably more :)

  8. Our church has a small group of women who gather weekly to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. They mostly do hand tied quilts with poly batting, and nothing fancy. I was surprised when I read that the quilts are used not just as bedding, but also as shelter, etc. depending on where they end up and what the most urgent needs are for the recipients.
