ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC 20 - Week 37

Welcome to Week 37 of the 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Our hostess, Angela @ So Scrappy, called for RED sewing during the month of September.  I've been doing a little of that.  Come along and I'll walk you through my week.

SUNDAY - I started the holiday weekend (US Labor Day) with a fun sewing project:

I forgot to share it in Saturday's post, but if you look closely, you will see the little basket sports a tiny bit of RED.  It's SEW much fun to use my fabric (and batting) scraps!  :o))

This morning I released a new Sew Some Love post.  Prepare to be AMAZED!!!  You will not believe how many fabric squares arrived:

MONDAY - Loading the longarm kept me busy...

... While I waited for Needleb to arrive.  She is came over to take some of those squares I showed you yesterday:

After our visit, I went back up to finish quilting, but you'll have to wait to see how that turned out.  October will be yellow month at the RSC and I think I want to finish the quilt then.

TUESDAY -  Today, I met my friend Hilary for some girl time:

We traded yarn-y tasks.  I attempted to figure out her pom-pom maker...

(Hopefully) It worked!

... While she wove in the ends of my Halloween Socks:

On the way home I stopped by Knittingsuek's house for a quick chat on her patio.  Can you believe that I forgot to take a picture with me in it, too???  Grr!

The purpose of the stop was to drop off...

Yep!  That adorable Large Quilted Thread Catcher I made over the weekend and judging by the smile on her face, she LOVES it:

Once I returned home, I did some more work on my new RED project for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  There is a funny story to go along with these X's.  They were inspired by my friend Diann @ Little Penguin Quilts...

WEDNESDAY - Last night, I seamed this backing fabric from my friend Dee Dee and loaded the longarm for the 2nd time this week:

Today, I had some paperwork to take care of and it was grocery processing day.

Early this afternoon, I met my friend Candy at our friend Joanna's house.  It was time for quilt pick-up:

After the meeting, I laid out the RED sewing that I've been doing between my Secret Sewing project and a variety of  other tasks:

The afternoon was spent working on my Secret Sewing project.  It's coming along nicely,  SEE?!  Here's a sneak peek:

Not to worry, readers, that's a Wonky Star and the points aren't required to be pointy.  The BIG reveal is coming soon!  Only two weekends and one work week remain.  YIKES!!  I better get quilting...

Sew Some Love Sunday - Lutheran World Relief - Arrival of the Second Box

Welcome to another edition of Sew Some Love Sunday!!  Today, I am here to share another package that arrived in support for LWR.  Nann @ With Strings Attached sent this box:

I appreciate that you shared the story behind the fabic:

I rarely remember who gave me what fabric once it's been incorporated into my stash.  So... Thank you, Paula P., for destashing some fabrics to Nann... Who has now shared some of those fabrics with me for the Lutheran World Relief effort:

She cut squares for the LWR quilts to be made.  Here they are, as viewed from the top of the box:

On further inspection...

...The bulk of the box was filled with squares... 500 of them!!!

Thank you doesn't begin to sound like enough to express my gratitude for your contribution to the LWR Charity Drive here on The Joyful Quilter blog. Sending fabric squares for TEN quilts? Wow! Yardage for several quilt backs on top of that? Awesome! The kicker was that you even sent along a check for batting. Incredible! That was an answer to an unspoken need. I had only, just yesterday, realized that I would need more batting to finish the LWR quilts.

What a blessing you have been, Nann, to me and to those people around the globe who will receive these quilts.

Another shout out...

After last week's LWR post, I got a comment from my good friend  Libby @ Life on the Hill blog.  Many thanks to Libby for her generous contribution to the shipping fund.

Is there still room for me to help, Joyful???

Absolutely!  Between Nann and Wendy, there is enough fabric for (at least) 15 quilt tops.  That means I'm going to have to purchase polyester batting (It dries quicker!) to finish FIFTEEN quilts.  I could DEFINITELY use some help toward that goal!!

Donations of Twin Sized Quilters DREAM POLY Select or Quilters DREAM POLY Request would be SEW useful.  Do you have any packages in your sewing space that you don't currently need?  (Because of severe allergies) I would happily accept those from any smoke-free home.  I realize that's a rather specific request, but the brand makes a quality product which affords excellent quilted results.

If YOU don't have batting on hand, maybe you can provide assistance toward the batting fund, even a couple dollars would be helpful.  Please leave a comment below and I'll get back to you with my mailing address, if you would like to mail a check.   Perhaps, PayPal works better for you.  A link to my email address can be found in my Blogger profile or leave a comment below and I will provide that information, as well.

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC20 - Week 36

Welcome to Week 36 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  It's transition week at the RSC.  We will put away our PURPLE fabric scraps and pull out a new color.  That happens on Tuesday.

SUNDAY - This morning, I released another Sew Some Love Sunday post.  Check it out!  You won't believe what arrived in this large Priority Mail box for our Lutheran World Relief project:

Today was a very special day.  It was the day that I got to meet Preeti @ Sew Preeti Quilts.  On a Zoom call, of course:

She is SEW delightful!!  (Just don't get her going on current hot topics.)  Preeti is energetic and inventive.  She has a LOT going on in her sewing room, but I'll let her reveal that information when the time is right.

Our meeting was made possible by LeeAnn @ Not Afraid of Color, who has spoken with Preeti in the past.  She joined us today:

TUESDAY - Today ended up being a stay-at-home day.  I released a new Tidy Up Tuesday post.  Here's a preview:

After dinner I managed to do a bit of work on my secret sewing project. No worries!  It will only be a secret for a few more weeks.

WEDNESDAY - Yesterday, I issued a RED Basket Challenge to Judy @ Busy Hands Are Happy Hands.  Here was her reply:

"You are on, Joy!  Let’s do it! I’ve cleared a shelf and everything!"

This morning Knittingsuek stopped by:

The cable guy was here, too.  Faster internet was today BIG thing!

After lunch, I enjoyed choosing fabrics for this month's mini quilt:

Later, as I waited for time to zoom with LeeAnna, I decided that I should assemble the rows of my Weekly Quilt Group's Pineapple Pieces quilt to be donated to a hospital in Winston Salem:

After our phone call (because Zoom didn't happen today), I loaded the next quilt on the frame:

Dinner happened and then I put those RED scraps to work:

THURSDAY - Today was a Zoom-y day!  I enjoyed ZoomBEE with these lovely quilters first thing this morning:

Between meetings,  I put up my RED Kitchen Quilt:

This one dates back to my Quilter's Play Group days, prior to the start of my blog, so pre-July 2010.  We experimented with a different technique at each meeting and we're challenged to complete a piece using the method by the following meeting.

After nearly TWO YEARS, I am pleased to provide this sock report for Jeanne @ Loving Retirement (and anyone else who enjoys seeing random knitting on my quilting blog) here in my Fraternal Twins Socks with the remaining yarn and coordinating project bag:

And for the 2nd time this week...

I finished quilting a quilt on the longarm:

I still have to roll it off the machine (and bury the thread tails), but I'm calling it DONE!!  :o))

Tidy Up Tuesday - Condo Complex Complete

Welcome to another edition of Tidy Up Tuesday!!  I have spent the last week making bits of progress toward finishing one of the two PURPLE mini quilts that I created for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge during August.  As the month drew to a close, SEW did the project.

I shared the beginning of my IMPROV Adventure quilt in THIS edition of Design Floor Friday.

That brings us to the quilting...

LeeAnna suggested matchstick quilting.  Since the piece is modern, I decided to go with that.  The question begged how best to implement that style of close stitching.  What would YOU do???

What I did was sit it on top of the giant pile 'o quilts right next to my "Zoom chair".  This forced me to look at the quilt any number of times during the past week:

Eventually, I determined...

The best course of action would be to start by stitching the landscaping onto the quilt and go from there:

One leaf/bush turned to two...

... And two turned to three:

Once the "bushes" were sewn down, I moved on to quilting the tree:

That left only one piece of shrubbery to be attached...

Then I started in on the final section of the garden design by adding more of the bright green that danced around the quilt.  If you look carefully, you can see that stitching in the foreground.  The rest will wait for (potential) hand stitching, at a later date:

Next came the (actual) quilting...

Unlike with the stitching, this time, I began at the top of the quilt...

Working through the vertical stitching and moving on to the horizontal stitching:

Clouds were added to the sky section:

The final section remaining was the "sun" square:

My inclination was a big, smiley kindergarten sun or quilting in the word "sunshine", but my Design Assistant/DS2 didn't like either of those choices.  His idea would incorporate watery, rippled sun rays, however, in his description I latched onto the word "swirl."

Of course, you KNOW what happened next, don't you???

I exercised my "phone a friend" option and called in my Design Consultant.  Needleb suggested Deborah Boschert-like sun curve/arcs (which I always think of as rainbows) or a rising sun with ripple rays - meaning a half circle at the bottom of the yellow square with ray coming up around it.

Ultimately, I went with a swirly sun with wonky ray up in the top corner to keep that spot as the light source:

Answering the binding vs. facing question, I opted for a facing...

... And later could have kicked myself for being SEW focused on finishing the quilt that I missed out on reading the post from Linda @ Flourishing Palms!  In that post (sitting in my inbox) was the link to a MUCH better method (from WeAllSew) of doing a faced edge:

A quick photo of the completed quilt, hanging on the Gallery Wire at 10 PM.  Oops!!  Perhaps, I was in a hurry?  I didn't even bother with extra clips to make sure it hung straight:

I'm pretty sure this qualifies as a DrEAMI project, so I'll link up with Sandra @ Mmm... Quilts.  Since the design is fresh and modern, I will join in with Kelly @ My Quilt Infatuation for Needle and Thread Thursday.  Let's not forget Cynthia @ Quilting is more fun than Housework.  I'm ridiculously pleased with this scrappy project and will be sharing it next Sunday for Oh Scrap!

Last, but not least, I want to thank Deb @ A Quilter's Table for inspiring me to make this quilt in the first place.  I knew that I wanted to make a scrappy quilt using pieces of purple from this basket:

Until I looked back at the post linked above, I had no idea what I wanted to make.  Once I saw her little quilt, I couldn't stop myself.  Too bad you can't tell that I took even ONE piece of fabric out of my PURPLE scrap basket, let alone ALL of the pieces for my new mini!!!

Oh well, at least I had a really good time.  :o))
