June 2024 - TABLE SCRAPS Challenge - Link Party

Welcome to the June 2024 edition of the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge here at the Joyful Quilter!!  I'll start with a little backstory, in case you are new here.  (Apologies to my regular readers since you already know all about it.) I'm a scrap quilter who had been setting up individual challenges for several years in conjunction with Angela's (RSC) Rainbow Scrap Challenge @ So Scrappy.  Participants from around the corner, across the country and around the world have been having SEW much fun and we all have MORE scraps to use, so I am pleased to offer the...

In 2024, we have a broad range of quilted items that are appropriate for linking to the Challenge.  Baskets and bins, along with pillows and pin cushions, are all qualifying projects.  Not just the toppers, runners, and mug rugs.  Basically, ANY small quilted item qualifies.  The main premise is that you USE the (new or old) SCRAPS from your cutting table (or your friend's cutting table - since that's where the majority of my scraps come from!)

There will be a prompt each month to help get your creative juices flowing.  While you are NOT required to use it in your project, the guiding word will be revealed at the end of each month's LINK PARTY post.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the following month's focus.  It, along with the RSC Color of the Month (as soon as Angela releases it - around the 1st of the month.) will also be added to the 2024 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge page at the top of the blog.

The theme for June was...

WATERMELON

I really THOUGHT that I knew where I was going with that, but...

The Color of the Month was BLUE and when I rummaged through that basket to see if I could find what I was looking for, I came up with a bunch of scraps, but not the ones I was hoping to find:

It was time to pivot...

Enter Francine's recent (gifted scrap) Bag of Joy with this wonderful array of BLUE scraps, conveniently sewn into the strip set shown below:

My entry was ready for quilting with the addition of batting and backing:

I went minimal with the quilting this time:

The next step was cutting the table runner sized piece into placemats...

I was pleased to get three out of the panel:

The first one finished, shown on the porch swing:

Next, I found some some WATERMELON solid to bind another...

And then there were TWO:

When I didn't think I would have time to finish another, I pushed myself a little harder...

Suddenly, there were THREE:

I enjoyed combining Francine's leftovers with this month's TABLE SCRAPS Challenge to make these three placemats for our guild's Meals-On-Wheels contribution.  Watermelon was a fun challenge for me.  It's not just a fruit, but a color, as well:

A new month begins the day after tomorrow.  Angela announced the Color of the Month for July on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge post the morning after the Link Party went live.  It's a cool color for a hot month:

Welcome to another edition of The Guest Blogger(s)!!  I recently received an email from Jane in Australia.  She has completed her entry for the June TABLE SCRAPS Challenge.

Hello Joy,
I hope your health has been better lately, and also that you aren’t feeling hemmed in by the new neighbourhood popping up around you.
This month almost on the top of my scraps were the blue nautical fabric and the white sashing fabric - exact amounts of both!

Here is her entry:

The blue waves around the border took just 3 seconds to find…. So plenty of blue and plenty of water, - but it’s supposed to be watermelon!
So a watermelon binding- including the black seeds !!
Someone will love it when it makes its way to Meals on Wheels.
Hoping your summer is lovely, we are heading into winter.

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC24 - Week 25

Welcome to Week 25 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week I'm REALLY hoping to get my post release in a timely fashion.  No promises, though.  I'm also hoping to share some BLUE sewing, too.  Did that happen???

SUNDAY - This week began with my usual Weekly Morning Art Zoom.  It was Roll the Dice day with the following prompts:  favorite tool, pencil marks, map, dots, and orange...

Another roll presented the following prompts...

Black, tissue or napkin, favorite color, make marks, colored pencil:

After lunch Knittingsuek and I got together for our weekly Zoom call:

Once dinner was done, I took a FREE ombre acrylic Poppy painting class:

I used the excess paint for the "ellipse" ICAD prompt shown in the 2nd photo below:

MONDAY - Work was preceded by a bit of art.  I added another layer to my Mini Muse Maker journal spread.  I adapted the instructions from a FREE class with @delightrogers_art:

After work, I stopped by home (and Britt's house) before heading to my Monthly Quilt Guild meeting.  Alas, car trouble sent me back to my house instead.  I watched our speaker Kena Dorsey's presentation about Using African Fabrics in Quilts on my computer:

My favorite was this self-portrait pairing African fabrics with solid fabrics:

TUESDAY - I was off work today.  You KNOW what that means, don't you?

Yep.  A little bit of art was followed by errands and appointments.  I added more watercolor marks to the CREATIVITY card below:

Fortunately, I got home with the groceries before these guys rolled in...

And blocked our driveway while delivering two loads of wallboard:

Since I was "trapped" at home, I work on the first layer of my "Impasto" Poppy painting.  Can you see all the texture?  The photo below shows how it looked at the end of the night:

WEDNESDAY - Day two of my mid-week weekend.

I'm not sure what kept me busy during the morning hours, but after lunch I met with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color for our weekly Zoom session:

THURSDAY - Work...

Beforehand, I added some details to my latest Poppy painting.  One more layer of paint is needed to fill in those stems:

I was excited to get off work early enough to attend Traci's Winging It hangout on Get Messy:

I went a different direction with the idea that she presented and came up with the following page...

And worked on watercolor elements from Kristi Nazarro's lesson from Tuesday for an idea I found to implement Traci's pocket element missing from the photo above:

FRIDAY - Work

Was preceded by the addition of a sew details to the ICAD cards shown below, Ranunculus and Beach:

After dinner, I enjoyed hanging out with my Get Messy art friends during my Weekly Evening Art Zoom.  I worked on a few random things, but don't have photos to share.

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will visit Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  I was actually EARLY to the party to join the link-up.

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC24 - Week 24

Welcome to Week 24 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and the latest edition of Tidy Up Tuesday!!  This week was filled to the brim with activities and artwork.  BLUE sewing???  Obviously, busy enough that I didn't get my post written in a timely fashion.

SUNDAY - This week began with my usual Weekly Morning Art Zoom.  I worked on entries for the Index Card a Day challenge...

After lunch, I enjoyed a visit with Knittingsuek:

MONDAY - Work was preceded by a bit of art.  I started the journal page last night and added a few more details this morning.  Other members of the Curiosity Collective will be working on theirs before I get home this afternoon:

TUESDAY - Work was scheduled for today, but I took time to watch the latest class from Get Messy and decided that this quote was what I wanted for my journal page:

After work, I was off to the doctor to see if he can figure out why I'm coughing...  Again.

What did he say, Joyful???

(Apparently...)  There's nothing wrong.  Grr!  Just like when you take a car to the mechanic and it won't make the noise it's been making... I didn't cough ONCE during the entire appointment.  Sigh...  I'm guessing this means that it's just my reflux going through the roof and I'll have to be more careful about what I'm eating, so as not to aggravate it further.

WEDNESDAY - Work

My computer start page had me thinking of the RSC Quilters with this clear BLUE water:

After work, I raced home for my weekly Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

THURSDAY - Today was the start of my 4-day weekend!!!  :o))

What a treat it was to visit with the lovely ladies of my (Weekly) Morning Quilt Bee:

After errands and some lunch, I dove into the Watercolor Mastery class series with Emily Olson that I signed  up for earlier this month.  I mixed up my own pinks for the flower painting below:

FRIDAY - I was super excited to attend Knit Group...

But first I did a bit of BLUE binding:

Once that was done, I headed out to meet Tracy at our favorite coffee shop, as the rest of the group members were busy with summer plans (or sleeping late) instead of knitting:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you visited Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  I was focused on making headway on this month's donation project and only managed to copy her link for my post... You know the one?  The post that I was too busy to release.

Here is some BLUE scrap sewing that I hope will make up for neglecting to link up earlier:

This afternoon I had an art Zoom with Claudette @thecreativeflourish making affirmation cards.  I repeated the process on my journal page shown in the top left of the photo below:

Turquoise/teal are shades of BLUE, right?  See!  I was thinking of my RSC Quilter friends (even if I have been hit or miss in visiting everyone's posts lately.)  Time is a limited resource and I've been spending more of mine on art this month.  Never fear... I'm still quilting!  Just not quite so much as I used to.

Note to my regular readers...

My apologies to those of you who missed my post over the weekend.  Thank you to those of you who wrote to check up on me!  I'm doing ok.  My back is MUCH better!  Although, not quite 100%, but my pain level is down at the lower end of the scale and most often residing at a dull ache, as opposed to the level 10 that it had been.

SUNDAY - Weekly Morning Art Zoom found me working in my Get Messy Art Journal:

Later in the afternoon, Meg Journals put up a new video on YouTube.  I'm a sucker for making paper bag journals, so once my sewing was done, I jumped right in with the first part of the process:

Back to work today.  Sigh...

After a trip to the grocery store, I experimented with a paint technique I've been noticing around Instagram.  My plastic produce bag didn't hold the air well enough to properly produce a flower design, but it was worth a try:

My weekly Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color was canceled this week, as we both ended up with afternoon appointments on our calendar.  :o((

THURSDAY - My weekend started early, as I'm off work today and tomorrow.  Yay!!  I had hoped that meant that I could attend my Weekly Quilt Bee meeting.  Did that happen???

Nope!  My SIL wanted to meet for lunch:

After lunch, I went shoe shopping and then met my friend Cindy for a snack at her favorite coffee shop on the way home:

FRIDAY - TABLE SCRAPS Challenge
