ProjectQUILTING - Season 15.1 - Bird House

Bird House

Welcome to The Joyful Quilter!!  And... Welcome to the wonderful world of Project QUILTING hosted by Kim Lapacek @ Persimon Dreams!!  This is my 4th year of participation in the Challenge.  Trish Frankland @ QuiltChicken is the creator of the crazy challenges that participants will face during the next 12 weeks.

Sassy @ Farm Quilter got me started at the beginning of Season 11 by inviting her readers to join in the fun.  I accepted her invitation and the rest is history.  As I have in past years, I believe that I will be dragging along my friend LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color again this season, as she enjoys having a reason to stretch her creative wings.  Would YOU like to join me in this creative journey, too?

BEWARE:  It's a wild ride, but oh SEW rewarding!

Challenges are given and start to finish you have ONE WEEK to complete your project.  PQ 15.1 can be found at THIS LINK:

Step One...

Read the instructions to see what is required of the first challenge.  Here's what Trish had to say:

PQ 15.1 BIRD HOUSE

This week, I’d like you to be inspired by the myriad places a bird calls “home.” As always, this can be interpreted many ways: birdhouses, nests, birdcages, and trees could all apply – and you may take this theme anywhere else your imagination roams! If you can explain the connection (however tenuous) we’re on board!
We don’t have many rules, but please make sure you read through them and understand what’s going on. If you have questions, ask. Join the Challenge Quilts group on Facebook for a lot of encouragement and inspiration.
But most of all, have fun!

Step Two...

Put on my thinking cap to come up with an idea that meets the challenge.

Why, Joyful???

I have a Brid House orphan block in my stash.  Would it be breaking the rules to start with that?  I don't think so, since it's only a block as opposed to a pre-done quilt top.

Step Three...

Gather supplies:

I reached for my Dark/Bright GREEN Quilted Scrap Basket, as Angela from the Rainbow Scrap Challenge called that for January's Color of the Month.

Tutorial for these baskets can be found HERE.

Step Four...

Review the rules:

RULE ONE: Use the inspiration of a bird’s house for your project.

You have one week to meet the challenge. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline – that is, started on or after January 7, 2024, and linked up by noon Central Time January 14, 2024.  Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count toward prizes.
Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline.

Step Five... Any ideas?

1. A quilt modeled after last year's Welcome to the Neighborhood.

2. A new quilt for my Words and Phrases series.

Step Six...PLAY!!!

Every quilt begins with a background, so I dug into my light neutral scrap baskets:

Here is a bit of my construction process...

(Scroll down to the bottom of the post NOW, if you don't care to see a blow by blow of the making of my quilt.)

Within an hour of the challenge's posting, here is the background that I came up with:

Where to next, Joyful???

That's a good question.  Keep reading.  With 3.5 days remaining until the deadline, I moved this project to the next stage.  The background was assembled:

But, my Bird House needs a roof!

How about this one?  "Quilting by Committee", the survey says... Very jaunty! of the selected topper:

Then, as the clock ticked down...

A day later, completing the binding was all that remained:

I tested a few options...

 And...

This was the clear winner:

With nearly 40 hours until the deadline, I present my completed entry for PQ 15.1:

There is usually a reason that I participate in these challenges...

... And this time, it was because my entry will make a perfect donation for our guild's Silent Auction at the Quilt Show coming up this Fall.

There you have it...

Process, product, and the REAL reason for accepting this Challenge.

Follow THIS LINK to the Season 15 overview.  Check back on the Challenge release days (or sign-up to be notified automatically) and there may be one that YOU just can't resist. I'm pleased to have joined the Link Party with 12 hours remaining until the deadline.  Yay, me!  :o))

It's a SHORT turnaround time!

Depending on the size and complexity of your project, that doesn't HAVE to be insurmountable.  With a little creativity and a few evenings, you really CAN do this!  My project was planned out shortly after the prompt was announce but was finished with fewer than 48 hours until the deadline.  I did manage to link up with more than a few hours to spare.  Quite a departure from most of my PQ entries.

Until next time...
Challenge accepted!!!

Remember:  If I can do this, YOU can do it, too!

(Plus, there's a spot to post your completed Project QUILTING inspired projects AFTER the deadline for any of the challenges.)

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC24 - Week 2

Welcome to Week 2 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week, I'm STILL on the schedule to work all week.  Maybe NEXT week will be different, but that remains to be seen.  Here's a flashback to the art that I created during last Saturday's Get Messy season opener hangout:

I used a portion of a calendar page from The Artist Almanac 2024.  The paper bits you see are from a work by Andrea Chebeleu @ A Work of Heart Studio.

With my available free time, I managed the following...

SUNDAY - My day began by hanging out with a few of my Get Messy art friends.  I worked on this mixed media page for Junk Journal January:

Knittingsuek was busy today, so Britt and I chatted for a while afterwards:

MONDAY - Work

Long before time to leave, I captured a photo of this incredible sunrise:

This evening, I enjoyed a visit with Quilt Diva Julie and the Penn Oak Quilters:

Julie began her presentation with highlights from her book...

... And went on to share photos and insights behind each of the quilts in her Dumpster Diving series.  I have long been a fan!  As you may or may not know, scrap quilts are my quilty love language:

After the presentation, I worked on this journal page using a portion of my Artist Almanac calendar - which I wasn't sure that I would be able to rip apart.  I've found it to be quite a fun jumping off point for my work:

I wasn't sure who the original work belonged to, but guessed that it was Dee Dee Catron's.  She later confirmed that in a comment on my Instagram post.

TUESDAY - Work

But first, Breakfast with Hilary:

It was a VERY rainy day in our part of North Carolina!  I came home to this view of the creek behind our house:

Neighbors who have lived here for some time said this was the worst flooding in 20 years.

After dinner, I sewed with some GREEN scrap chunks:

WEDNESDAY - Work...

... Was followed by my weekly Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color.  Wonder of wonders, we are back to our regular day:

THURSDAY - Work

I thought you might like to see the journal page that I worked on during yesterday's chat with LeeAnna:

FRIDAY - Work

TGI (A) W I worked on this...

And finished up my entry for this week's ProjectQUILTING challenge:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.

Until next time...

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC24 - Week 1

Welcome to Week 1 of the 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week is full of promise.  My hope for this first week of the New Year is that I will find time for ALL the things.  Will that happen?

Let's have a look...

SUNDAY - Zoom, Zoom, Zoom!!

Before that...

My 2023 Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Year in Review post went live on the blog.

I started my day with a few of my Get Messy friends.  I worked on this entry for the 5-Minute Art Challenge...

And...

Britt showed off her first collage in the mini journal that I gave her for Christmas:

After lunch, I enjoyed my weekly Zoom session with Knittingsuek:

MONDAY - Happy New Year!!!

Angela announced the Color of the Month for January.  Here is what I have to work with in the Dark and/or Bright GREEN that we have been encouraged to play with:

Check out my RSC 2024 - The Plan post which was released today.

After lunch, I was thrilled to be able to visit with my friends from the Curiosity Collective at Get Messy.  We were exploring how to embrace a new season of art making.  This was my takeaway from the lesson:

After that was done, I worked on the page for the 5-Minute Art Challenge:

TUESDAY - Tidy Up Tuesday

Today, on the blog, I released the following post:

After work, I was greeted by this gorgeous sunset:

And, with that, the Year End/New Year barrage of blog posts has ended.  We will now revert back to just a few posts per week.

I'm celebrating by sewing up some GREEN scraps:

I came home to this view of our inaccessible driveway:

Yes, there is some sort of machinery on in front of my garage space:

THURSDAY -  Work, but this was the view afterwards:

And when I got home, I found that our from yard had been restored to a more reasonable condition:

FRIDAY - Work...

Finished for the week with this cloud covered sunset:

Was followed by my weekly Zoom session with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

At the end of the evening, I discovered that Angela is hosting a new event this year:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  I'll add the direct link when she gets this week's party started.

Until next time...

Winter 2024 - (Ravelry) UFO Club - The List

Welcome back to The Joyful Quilter!!  The Winter 2024 (Ravelry) UFO Club is now OPEN for sign-ups!!  Participants MUST list (at least) FIVE quilt projects. Photos should accompany the list. Sign-ups end at midnight EDT on January 7, 2024.

NOTE: All qualifying finishes must be posted BEFORE midnight (EST) on March 31, 2024!!!

What's the plan this time, Joyful???

My strategy is usually to list WAY more projects than I could EVER possibly finish in a single session and hope for the best!  The "at least FIVE" project requirement for participation is the bare minimum, but I tend to err on the side MORE is better.  You see, I'm a bit of a moody quilter.  That means I have to "be in the mood" to work on any given project!  By varying the size and style of the items included on my list, I have options.  These choices increase the chances of finding projects that I want to work on during the quarter.

Here is my project list for the WINTER 2024 (Ravelry) UFO Club:
1. QFK JRR on Steriods (2023)
2. SAHRR Holiday Edition (2023)

3. Blue and Green for Parrish (2016)

4. Yellow JRR on Steroids - A2 Baby! (2023)

5. DOQ Neighborhood Challenge (2023)

6. Scrap Jar Stars (2017)

7. Sweet Kisses (2021?)

8. Grape Candy Coated (2023)

9. Scrappy Light NEUTRAL Runner/Topper (2023)

10. Noah's Grad Quilt (2020)

11. Stay at Home ROW Robin (2021)

12. Bright Eyes (Faces Workshop 2021)
SEW...

Since I'm clearly out of my mind, I have chosen to compile an equally heavy list as last term.  The reasoning behind the insanity is that with 12 projects for the Winter 2024 UFO Club, I'm hoping that I will be lured by the options and will plan for additional quilting time - alongside Project Quilting AND the 2024 Stay at Home Round Robin.  You KNOW what they say about busy people, right?  They get MORE done.  My goal is actually only ONE finish for the quarter.  More than that is a bonus!

Speaking of bonuses...

13. QFK Crayon Challenge (2023)

I thought I'd added a few to be on the safe side, but removed a few, too!  There are times when I can't manage more than a small project. A baker's dozen, it is!
Remember...
There's still time for YOU to join in the finishing fun!  Sign-ups are open through Sunday, January 7th @ midnight (EST), so head over to the Quilters Knitting group on Ravelry today.  Email if you need help with the process. (You will need to sign-up for Ravelry, the Quilters Knitting group, then state your intentions and projects in the discussion thread linked above.)
Until next time...
Wish me luck!!

RSC24 - The Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

Happy New Year!!!

Welcome to my planning post for the 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Welcome to a new year.  Welcome to another year of using my scraps down to the very last inch.  It may take a lifetime, but it is SEW much fun!! With that goal in mind, I am beginning my 10th year of participation in the RSC.  Angela hosts this colorful monthly event to encourage us to sew up ALL of our fabric scraps, one color at a time, by assigning each month a color of the rainbow.

What's on your project list for the coming year, Joyful???

Last year, I really meant to make blocks from Rachel @ Stitched in Color's Pas De Deux BOM.  I didn't get very far.  I got distracted by my Guild's Neighborhood Challenge and made blocks for that instead.

However, as I sewed for the...

2023 ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge here on the blog, I kept Angela's RSC Color of the Month prompts in mind to create a series of small quilted projects.  It was a great way to use some of my fabric scraps during the last 12 months.

During 2024...

I  plan to continue my focus on the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge in Angela's RSC Color of the Month.  YOU are welcome to join me!  Click on the LINK too find out more about this year's Challenge.  Everything else will be secondary (and I'm not going to beat myself up about it.)

If time allows...

I would like to create a donation quilt top in each of the RSC Colors of the Month, inspired by Jasmine @ Quilt Kisses and her TUTORIAL for the Jumbo Jelly Roll Race quilt.  If you have followed the tutorial, you may recognize that I went a little off track with the two quilts below.  I had a specific size in mind, so altered the cutting plan:

Umm, Joyful... Where are the scraps in those quilts???

While, you might be correct in thinking there are no scraps, but there COULD be!  I plan to add random scrappy squares in the Color of the Month.  It seems like a good use of some stash fabric and scrap chunks.  Plus, I really just want to try something a little different in the coming year!

If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious...

I may try to get them quilted and bound during the month, too!

As always...

If I suddenly feel the urge to make quilt blocks, I reserve the right to alter my course for 2024!

Let's take a look back to 2023 in Joyful Quilterland...

Since we KNOW that I didn't make many blocks, just what DID I do with my quilting time???

I immersed myself in my art journaling instead of getting my studio completely unpacked and organized.  While NOT engaged in those activities (or art-ing), I worked on sewing small scrap projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  The studio is fully functional, but in 2024 it needs additional decluttering in order to be MORE comfortable.  Some more organizing probably needs to happen for that to occur.

My fabric scraps made the following:

20  mini quilts/quilted mug rugs
2  table mat/runners
4 quilted pin cushions
2 wall hangings
2 large gift quilts
5 other quilted items

For a total of...

Thirty-five (35) scrappy projects that I completed as part of the 2023 Rainbow Scrap Challenge (in conjunction with my own TABLE SCRAP Challenge offered here on the blog) and a variety of other events.

You can see all of these in my 2023 Year in Review post.  I did my best to sew with the assigned Color of the Month throughout the calendar year.  These small scrappy projects bring me great joy and entice me to spend time in the studio!!!

Aside from my scrap usage...

I also completed seven (7) UFOs over the course of the year.  My list changed each quarter and I didn't stress which items were (or weren't) completed.  I had one (1) "client quilt" to keep me busy once the longarm was feeling well enough to quilt.  I managed to keep the number of  new starts to a minimum (and maximized my time at Quilt Retreat) so progress on the UFO List was much improved.

In spite being slow to "right" the studio in 2023, it was still quite a productive year for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge endeavors.  Wish me luck for a productive 2024!

A new LINK PARTY will be posted on each Saturday of the year.

Until next time...
SCRAPPY New Year!!!
