Sew Some Love Sunday - LWR - 20 Quilts Out the Door

Welcome to a LONG OVERDUE edition of Sew Some Love Sunday!  The outline of this post has been put together for a number of months.  I kept forgetting to schedule and release it.  Sorry for the delay, but here is the update that some of you have been waiting for.

20 Quilts Ready to Comfort...

What began in August 2020 (LINK) snowballed through the rest of that year.  The effort, which continued to build momentum throughout 2021, found a sense of urgency with the Wrap Ukraine in Quilts movement begun in March 2022 and the We Stand for Ukraine movement begun in April 2022.  In May 2022, I stopped waiting for ALL of the quilts to be completed.  The quilts that were done would be shipped to LWR... Now (a relative term, as you will soon see.)

As with everything in Joyful QuilterLand, it was a process...

(After several failed attempts) The LWR Mission Project quilts were retrieved from a friend's house - she had been storing them since before the move last year, as I was afraid to pack them and have any go missing:

June 2022

They rode around in the back of the car for a week before being brought in to be prepared for mailing:

Folded and boxed to be shipped off:

Sealed and ready to take to work for shipment:

July 2022

20 Quilts Out the Door...

Finally, the two BIG boxes were loaded in the car:

August 2022

Wow!!  That was something.

Check the Donation tab at the top of the page.  Makers and contributors have all previously been acknowledged.  Thank you to all who have participated!  I expected these quilts to be gone last year.  Moving house and a machine malfunction derailed that goal.  Two YEARS after the project began, the bulk of the quilts were on their way to providing comfort for those in need.

But WAIT!!  There's MORE...

The LWR Mission Quilt project here at The Joyful Quilter is still not complete.  The last few quilts still need to be quilted and one block set remains to be sewn into a top.  Never fear!  Those, along with the remaining donated fabrics will be stitched into another quilt or two (or 10!), as time allows.  My main concern was getting these 20 quilts out of here.  Not in a mean "I'm SEW tired of these" kind of way!  In an urgent kind of "these quilts have a purpose to fulfill" sort of way.  The stars aligned and off they went.

People often ask how they can help.  Well, I've stopped accepting fabric, quilt tops, and $$$ for the project.  I have batting for the remaining quilts and a number of generous contributors have covered the lion's share of the shipping charges that will be incurred for future shipments.  Thank you to EVERYONE who contributed to the effort in any way, small or large!  Special thanks to Eric Brinsfield, owner of Southern Season, for his generous contribution to the shipping fund, as well.  I couldn't have made such a large impact on my own.

As an example of how helpful people have been...

After a prominent quilter posted about Lutheran World Relief, Nann @ With Strings Attached and Mari @ The Academic Quilter, both generous contributors to the LWR Quilt Project here on the blog, for making me aware of the following...

For those of you who haven't heard, Pat Sloan took a tour to LWR warehouse. Thank you to Nann and Mari for sending this video LINK HERE. The factoid that caught my attention was that when they process quilts, they bundle/bale approx. 700 - 800/day! Some days they work on quilts some days they work on other aspects of the charity.

I'm SEW pleased to have facilitated our effort to contribute quilts to Lutheran World Relief.

Until next time...
SEND some LOVE!!!

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC22 - Week 51

Welcome to Week 51 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week spent taking it easy.  Sewing and art-ing, as I was able.  Most of the sewing you will have to wait a while longer to see.  Sorry about that, but the December 2022 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge will be here before you know it.

SUNDAY - I started the week with some art-ing...

While waiting for time to Zoom with Knittingsuek:

MONDAY - Played with some paper cutting.  Snowflake style:

TUESDAY - Two more pages in my Care December journal:

Tonight, I selected, folded and glued up my "traveler's notebook" journal for Junk Journal January:

WEDNESDAY - I planned to go get my Christmas box from work today... After finishing today's spread for Care December:

Intentional Social Media was the prompt and we were encouraged to do some intuitive art.
For me, that often means using a portion of a photo to complete a scene.

Plans changed when I saw a car drive up while making my lunch.  My boss brought it to me with a get well card signed by everyone.  So sweet!!!

Since I wasn't at work, I enjoyed an early afternoon Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color...

(Because my phone wasn't accepting calls) My Zoom with LeeAnn was followed by an impromptu Zoom call with Knittingsuek:

THURSDAY - Chore day.  A bit of cleaning and I don't know how many loads of laundry, but that's a job I don't mind.  Art-ing between switching out loads, this time, in my tab bound index card journal that I'm using for the December 5 Minute Art Challenge:

FRIDAY - How can it be Friday already?!?!  It's baking day, as I have an errands to run tomorrow and DS1 arrives after dinner tonight.

But, WAIT!!!

This happened instead:

(A dusting of) SNOW on the neighbor's roof and NO POWER!!!

Yes, I am wearing all the wool things INSIDE the house!!!  That didn't stop me from doing a little bit painting:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  They may be more forthcoming with the projects they've been working on.  For me, I can only show the following...

A rainbow of scraps that remain:

Until next time...
Be SEW scrappy!!

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC22 - Week 50

Welcome to Week 50 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen.  This week might be a bit of a wild ride.

Why is that, Joyful???  Well, let's cut to the video tape...  Er... Have a look at the entries below...

SUNDAY - Let's begin with yesterday, shall we?  When I left you (dropped my post), I put my big girl panties on and took myself to our Quilt Bee's Holiday Potluck and let me just say, the quilters were out in full force:

It took 3 photos to get photos of everyone and I'm still not quite sure why I didn't just insist that everyone step out on the porch for a minute in order to get a proper group photo.  :o((

Anyway... Here's the gift table for our game of Dirty Santa:

Back to today...

A lovely Zoom call with Knittingsuek is a great way to start off any week:

MONDAY - Work, but no time for Wordle, as we were absolutely slammed today!  One if the Temps wore perfume to the office.  Again.  Like the last time she did, I got sniffly, my throat was itchy and  I developed a headache.  I thought nothing of it, as I am highly scent sensitive.

Alas...

Something made me test when I got home:

Ugh!!  Really???

Yes, after two and a half YEARS of diligence and I get Covid twelve days before Christmas (Eve)!  What's a crafter to do???  I quarantined up in the studio and got another series of collages done tonight:

TUESDAY - The first order of business (after emailing the quilters last night) was calling for a TeleHealth appointment.  That happened and meds were called in.  (Thanks for picking those up for me, DH!!)

Obviously, my Covid booster helped, as I was able to function fairly well for several hours today.  I slept late and did take an afternoon nap, but overall it was business as usual in the studio.  A little quilting...

And a little art-ing happened:

Heads up for anyone who hasn't had the antiviral meds...

They are NASTY!!!

The metallic taste left in my mouth was almost more than I could bear.  However, my medical history made me a candidate for receiving the Paxlovid.  Knowing that, I went with my physician's recommendation.  Would I do it, again?  Probably so.  Who knows how the virus might have progressed otherwise?  Honestly, I wasn't willing to take that chance!

WEDNESDAY - A beautiful puffy pink morning...

Was followed by some scrappy pink trimming...

Thanks, Ella!!  I had fun sorting through the scrap bags you shared with me on Saturday:

Once I got tired of standing (which is still leaving me feeling winded and fatigued), I moved on to watching a few YouTube videos.  After a bit of recovery time, I worked on a project for December's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Black is definitely a Dark NEUTRAL:

These HSTs have been hiding in a scrap bag from Maggie (Thanks, Mags!) for I don't even KNOW how long.  Time to make them shine!  (More on that in a couple weeks.  TABLE SCRAPS Challenge entry, perhaps?)

The highlight of my day was my weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color, but boy was she confused when I scheduled it before my work day was supposed to end:

During the evening hours, I worked on this card from the #deckofdreams project.  Britt made so many beautiful backgrounds, but this one asked me for some shading.  I lightened the "sky" and used my new green gold fluid acrylic to brighten up the "grass" in the foreground, then collaged on this peaceful scene:

THURSDAYI'm working on a different sort of sewing project this morning.  It's all thanks to my Beemate LyndaMac!  This will fit perfectly into an upcoming post for the blog...

I was excited to use the new-to-me pattern on an upcycling project:

In the midday, I enjoyed a YouTube LIVE with Ali @ Vintage Page Designs, working along with her to make this Mini Matchbook journal from the tissue box I emptied just last night:

The afternoon was filled with a rainbow or colorful scrap sewing...

While the evening hours were spent creating a new paper bag journal for Care December a sort of challenge to get you journaling with a focus on self-care during the craziness of the holiday season:

FRIDAY - Scrap sewing with a bit of Dark NEUTRAL...  Navy IS a neutral, y'all!!  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  Unfortunately, the project must remain a mystery, for now:

After dinner, I worked on my Care December journal.  This is the first spread.  I used some long lost stickers (that I didn't recall I had purchased) when stating my intentions for participation and thought I'd mimic the illustration on the opposing page... With finger painting.  I had hoped for more color blending, but the paper didn't hold up well enough:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  Many of them have been finishing off rainbow quilts left and right.  Who wants to miss a single one of them?  Personally, I feel inspired by all the pretty colors.

Until next time...
Get SCRAPPY!!

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC22 - Week 49

Welcome to Week 49 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week ???

SUNDAY - Today started off like most Sunday's do.  I enjoyed my weekly Zoom call with Knittingsuek:

In the evening, I played with some paint and paper:

MONDAY It was a CRAZY day at work!!!

Afterwards... I worked with a few Dark NEUTRAL scraps for the RSC.  Mistakes were made.  Has this ever happened to you???

I'm not sure if the hole was there BEFORE I scorched the fabric or if I literally burned a hole in it while I was pressing this Dark NEUTRAL scrappy something.

TUESDAYToday, I trained a new customer service rep.  It was actually a slower day than I would have preferred, as I don't feel like she got a clear picture of all our duties.

(Instagram friends might have seen this already.)  This evening, I took some time to do a little mixed media collage on one of the cards that Britt prepared for me:

WEDNESDAY - Wordle?  What Wordle?!  I barely had time for lunch!!!

I raced home for my weekly Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

It was an abbreviated visit, but I think we touched on all of our regular topics.  :o))

THURSDAY - A busy day at work, but with reinforcements in attendance, it was (thankfully) a fairly stress-free day.

FRIDAY - Before work, I took a few minutes to plan this evening's art project:

Whew!!  The minions returned for another CRAZYBUSY day!  For the most part, we worked together like a well oiled (sewing) machine.  Life is good... Even if my sunset photos didn't turn out.  :o((

I did capture this shot of tonight's full moon:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.

Until next time...
Get SCRAPPY!!

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC22 - Week 48

Welcome to Week 48 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week...  Was a complete blur.  Let's see if I might be able to piece together a post for you.

Guess what???

There was a bit of scrappy sewing involved.  Yay, me!  Read on...

SUNDAY - Zooming with Knittingsuek started my week off right:

And then...

I dug into my 1" strip drawer for Dark NEUTRAL scraps - with some (faded) denim blue in the mix:

It seems that I've lost my knack for precision sewing with all the improv I've been doing:

I enjoyed sewing for Cynthia's new charity project, but then I moved on to a quick art project:

MONDAY - Mini Monday

Here's a taste of what you'll see in the post linked above:

I believe I mentioned last week that I'm working full time thru the holidays.  Things have been busy, but I was able to do a quick Wordle in three...

Leaving to a beautiful sunset is my favorite part of the holiday craziness:

TUESDAY - Work today, followed by this glorious sunset...

And this enormous flock of black birds while picking up dinner...

... On the way to my Monthly Evening Quilt Bee tonight:

These two didn't want to leave their knitting to join the rest of us for our group photo:

A hint at the eye popping color in that post:

At work, I got a big surprise...

WHAT?!?!  TWO screens!!!  There's a sharp learning curve, as this is the first time I've EVER had to manage more than a single monitor.  All while training a new customer service representative?  Here's what I thought about that:

During my lunch break, I completed the Quordle of the day... The ONLY one this week:

Dark clouds rolled in, but there was still a hint of a sunset:

I went straight home and got there just in time for my delayed (and abbreviated) Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

THURSDAY - After yesterday's cold front moved in, I was treated to another lovely sunset on my way home this evening:

FRIDAY - The skies were sunny for most of the day and afternoon temperatures were in the mid-60's.  As evening approached the clouds thickened, but there was still a hint of a sunset on the horizon when I left work for the day:

After dinner, I enjoyed playing with some paper scraps.  These cards were embellished with the orchid images that Britt shared with me at our meeting on Tuesday.  I fussy cut some, left a few torn, and others got rounded corners to match my cards:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  I'll meet you there, but first, I wanted to share the rainbow that appeared on my wall earlier this week:

Until next time...
Get SCRAPPY!!
