RSC26 - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge} - The Plan

Happy New Year!!!

Welcome to my planning post for the 2026 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Welcome to a new year.  Welcome to another year of using my scraps down to the very last inch.  It may take a lifetime, but it is SEW much fun!! With that goal in mind, I am beginning my 12th year of participation in the RSC.  Angela hosts this colorful monthly event to encourage us to sew up ALL of our fabric scraps, one color at a time, by assigning each month a color of the rainbow.

What's on your project list for the coming year, Joyful???

As with last year, I'll begin by tell you what is NOT on the project list.  I still don't plan on adding RSC blocks to my ongoing collections.  Even though there's a gracious plenty of "me time" to fit that into the schedule, I'm choosing to focus on other quilting objectives.

During 2026...

 I  plan to continue my focus on my UFOs in Angela's RSC Color of the Month.  YOU are welcome to join me, but I'm not planning on hosting any Link Parties this year!  I'm scaling back on obligations in order to promote opportunities for self-care.  Health and fitness will rank high on my priority list.

If there are no applicable UFO projects...

I will continue creating donation quilt tops in each of the RSC Colors of the Month, inspired by Jasmine @ Quilt Kisses and her TUTORIAL for the Jumbo Jelly Roll Race quilt, along with other easy pieced patterns:

If I'm feeling ambitious...

I will try to get them quilted and bound during the month.

As always...

If I suddenly feel the urge to make quilt blocks, I reserve the right to alter my course for 2026!

Let's take a look back to 2025 in Joyful Quilterland...

Since we KNOW that I didn't make blocks, just what DID I do with my quilting time???

Like last year, I immersed myself in my art journaling and watercolor painting instead of focusing on my quilting.  When NOT engaged in those activities, I worked on sewing small scrap projects for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and completed as many UFOs as possible.  The studio is fully functional, but in 2026 I will try to do additional decluttering with the goal of getting things a bit MORE organized.

My fabric scraps made the following:

12  mini quilts/quilted mug rugs

6 wall hangings

3 large-ish quilts

1 quilted chair cover 

2 small quilted baskets

1 quilted pillow

2 quilted art pieces mounted on a canvas

5 donation quilts

For a total of...

Thirty-two (32) scrappy projects, Twenty-six (26) of those were completed as part of the 2025 Rainbow Scrap Challenge (and/or in conjunction with my own TABLE SCRAP Challenge offered here on the blog) and a variety of other events.

You can see all of these in my 2025 Year in Review post.  I did my best to sew with the assigned Color of the Month throughout the calendar year.  These small scrappy projects bring me great joy and entice me to spend more time in the studio!!!

Aside from my scrap usage...

I completed eleven (11) UFOs over the course of the year - some of these are included by item type in the list above since they were started and/or finished because of the RSC.  Thankfully, I was able to keep the number of new starts (excluding quilt challenges) to a minimum and maximized my time at Quilt Retreats.

In spite of my avoidance of unpacking the final few boxes in the studio during 2025, I did a fair amount of decluttering as part of the 100 Day Project.  While my quilt project totals were only up a little this year, I managed to accomplish a fair amount for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge endeavors.  Wish me luck for a productive 2026!

RSC24 - The Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

 

Happy New Year!!!

Welcome to my planning post for the 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Welcome to a new year.  Welcome to another year of using my scraps down to the very last inch.  It may take a lifetime, but it is SEW much fun!! What's on your project list for the coming year, Joyful???

Last year, I really meant to make blocks from Rachel @ Stitched in Color's Pas De Deux BOM.  I didn't get very far.  I got distracted by my Guild's Neighborhood Challenge and made blocks for that instead.

2023 ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge here on the blog, I kept Angela's RSC Color of the Month prompts in mind to create a series of small quilted projects.  It was a great way to use some of my fabric scraps during the last 12 months.

During 2024...

 I  plan to continue my focus on the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge in Angela's RSC Color of the Month.  YOU are welcome to join me!  Click on the LINK too find out more about this year's Challenge.  Everything else will be secondary (and I'm not going to beat myself up about it.)

If time allows...

I would like to create a donation quilt top in each of the RSC Colors of the Month, inspired by Jasmine @ Quilt Kisses and her TUTORIAL for the Jumbo Jelly Roll Race quilt.  If you have followed the tutorial, you may recognize that I went a little off track with the two quilts below.  I had a specific size in mind, so altered the cutting plan:

Umm, Joyful... Where are the scraps in those quilts???

While, you might be correct in thinking there are no scraps, but there COULD be!  I plan to add random scrappy squares in the Color of the Month.  It seems like a good use of some stash fabric and scrap chunks.  Plus, I really just want to try something a little different in the coming year!

If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious...

I may try to get them quilted and bound during the month, too!

RSC23 - The Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

With that goal in mind, I am beginning my 9th year of participation in the RSC.  Angela hosts this colorful monthly event to encourage us to sew up ALL of our fabric scraps, one color at a time, by assigning each month a color of the rainbow.

What's on your project list for the coming year, Joyful???

Last year I followed along with Rachel @ Stitched in Color for her Pas De Deux BOM.  Registration opened Monday, January 3, 2022 with a SALE and I signed up for my 1st paid BOM ever! Something just clicked for me when I read the words "scrap-friendly and skill-building" in Rachel's newsletter post describing the BOM.

SEW...

My focus was just ONE project for RSC22:

That was to simply color in my planning sheet for the QAL and if that was all I could manage, that was totally fine.

However, as I sewed for the 2022 TABLE SCRAP Challenge...

I kept Angela's RSC Color of the Month prompts to create a small quilted project for the 2022 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge here on The Joyful Quilter as a way to use some of my fabric scraps during the last 12 months.

What's the plan for this year, Joyful???

During 2023, I  plan to focus on the ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge in Angela's RSC Color of the Month.  YOU are welcome to join me!  Click on the LINK to find out more about this year's Challenge.  Everything else will be secondary (and I'm not going to beat myself up about it.)

If time allows...

I would like to revive my Scrap Jar Star project from RSC17 (?!) for a "block-along" with my friend Chantal @ At the Corner of Scraps and Quilts for the quilt that I'm working towards.  "Cover Wars" can leave a body out in the cold.  As a result, a king sized quilt will be required.  I have a 21-block head start toward that goal:

If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious...

I would like to make the BOM blocks from last year, but I will continue to focus on my TABLE SCRAPS Challenge entries in the RSC Color of the Month.  

Beyond that...

Preeti's Picket Star blocks (shown below) were neglected in 2022.  If I can lay my hands on the collection of fabrics that were gathered in 2021, I will make enough blocks to finish up a small donation quilt:

Here's hoping the 2023 Rainbow Scrap Challenge will provide me with yet another opportunity to complete some additional blocks.

I worked toward getting my studio back up and running.  While NOT engaged in that activity (or art-ing), I worked on sewing small scraps for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  The studio is fully functional, but in 2023 it needs additional storage solutions in order to be MORE organized.  Some decluttering probably needs to happen, as well.

Those scraps made the following:

9  Mug Rugs

1 Table Runner

1  Placemat

2 Pin Cushions

5 Table Toppers

7 Mini Quilts

2 Wall Hangings

1 Lap Quilt

2 Other Quilted Items

For the last several years, the sewing squirrels have derailed my plans to make a small quilt top each month.  This year, that goal isn't even making the list!

If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious...

I would like to spend some time making the House blocks with fabrics selected during 2021.  I was inspired this quilt by Preeti @ Sew Preeti Quilts:

I had hope to make those House blocks, but didn't get very far with that.  Heck!  With our move, I didn't even manage to collect a year's worth of fabric for them.

Pack up my studio, move house, begin setting up my new studio and USE as many small scraps as possible in the interim, that's what!!

Sixteen (16) scrappy projects that I completed as part of the 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  :o))

I also completed 4 UFOs over the course of the year.  My list changed each quarter and I didn't stress which items were (or weren't) completed.  I had a number of "client quilts" (21, if you can believe it!) to keeping me busy (prior to the move.)  I also did a fair amount of chasing "squirrels" which also contributed to my slim progress on the UFO List.  It's all good, though.

In spite of moving house (and studio) in 2021, it was still quite a productive year for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge endeavors.  Wish me luck for a productive 2022!

RSC21 - The Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

As inspiration allows...

I hope to use the Color of the Month prompts to create a Table Runner/Table Topper for the 2021 Table Scraps TRT Challenge here on The Joyful Quilter as a way to use some of my fabric scraps this year.  

Last year, the squirrels derailed my plans to make a small quilt top each month.  Unless you count the wall hangings and mini quilts that I made!  It's just that I was thinking small, as in lap quilt size, but I guess it's no real surprise that I shrunk the scale of the monthly project, is it? Although, I did state the following "Even if this only happens ONCE during the year, I will consider it a success!"  Using some scraps to finish off "Charmed. I'm Sure!" satisfied that goal.

As time allows...

I would like to make one or more of these each month:

Scrap Jar Stars - This project was started in 2017 and was to continue into 2018, but that didn't really happen.  I still don't have enough blocks for a bed quilt and that's where I'm headed with this one.  King sized, to be exact!!

The 2021 Rainbow Scrap Challenge will provide me with another opportunity to complete some additional blocks.

If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious...

I would like to make some House blocks during the year.  I haven't settled on a particular pattern (and may not.)  I might just make a different pattern so that each home is unique.  We'll see how that goes, but I was inspired this quilt by Preeti @ Sew Preeti Quilts:

2020 was an extremely productive year for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge endeavors.  I'm not sure that I could have accomplished any more, if I had tried.  Wish me luck for a productive 2021!

RSC20 - The Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

Welcome to my planning post for the 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Welcome to a new year.  Welcome to a new decade of using my scraps down to the very last inch.  It is SEW much fun!! With that goal in mind, I am beginning my 6th year of participation in the RSC.  It's Angela's brilliant scheme to sew up ALL of our fabric scraps. One color at a time.  Silly, Angela!  Doesn't she know that USING scraps only breeds MORE scraps?!?!

(I'm STILL laughing hysterically at the thought of it.)

As inspiration permits...

I hope to use the Color of the Month prompts to create a small quilt top to use many of my fabric scraps this year.  There!!  I've said it.  It's out the Quilt-i-verse.  Even if this only happens ONCE during the year, I will consider it a success!

If that doesn't work out, I'd like to make progress on the components for the following RSC quilt:

"X" Blocks  -  These are the Alternate Blocks for the RSC15 Sampler.  They simply never got beyond cut squares.

I would also like to make some progress on the following project from my RSC17 list which I didn't touch in 2019:

Scrap Jar Stars - These blocks were started in 2017 and were supposed to continue into 2018, as I still don't have enough blocks for a bed quilt and that's where I'm headed with this one.

Slab Stars - This quilt began as Slab Blocks made during the RSC
15, my first year of participation.  (These continued through  the RSC16.)  

Angela had a beautiful RSC15 Sampler planned, but I simply wasn't feeling the sampler block thing that year.  I did, however, want to make a version of the quilt, but it took until 2017 to figure out HOW to accomplish that task!!

Block production stalled out during RSC18 and RSC19, but my love for this project remains.  Just look how scrappy these are:

The 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge will provide me with another opportunity to complete the necessary blocks.

The RSC19 Plan - {Rainbow Scrap Challenge}

Welcome to my planning post for the 2019 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  Sewing my scraps down to the very last inch gives me great pleasure.  With that goal in mind, I am beginning my 5th year of participation in the RSC.  It is Angela's brilliant scheme to sew up ALL of our fabric scraps. One color at a time.  Silly, Angela!  Don't you know that USING scraps just breeds MORE scraps?!?!

(Insert maniacal laughter here.)

This post will focus on my projects for:

Since I got distracted LAST year, I'm revisiting that list for THIS year...


Last year's list featured the following NEW projects:

Mari's Squared Away BOM will be running in conjunction with Angela's 2018 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

Sorry, Mari!  While I absolutely LOVED the blocks you chose and your tutorials are fabulous, there simply wasn't enough time.  I hope to revisit this project at a later date.

"X" Blocks  - A NEW / old project.  These are the Alternate Blocks for the RSC15 Sampler.  New, simply because I never started that portion of the quilt.

This is still a viable project that I hope to find time for in 2019!



I had hoped to reignite enthusiasm for these "NEW" projects and that goal still holds for BOTH of these.



Last year's list continued the following OLD projects:

Scrap Jar Stars - These blocks were started in 2017 and will continue into 2018, as I don't have enough blocks for a bed quilt and that's where I'm headed with this one.  King sized, to be exact!!

Slab Stars - This quilt began as Slab Blocks made during the RSC
15, my first year of participation.  (These continued through  the RSC16.)  Anyway, Angela had a beautiful RSC15 Sampler planned, but I simply wasn't feeling the sampler block thing that year.  I did, however, want to make a version of the quilt, but it took until 2017 to figure out HOW to accomplish that task!!

Maverick Stars:

String Blocks, since Strings seem to be "a thing" for 2019...

... May work their way back under the (sewing machine) needle.  These were, with the exception of a few Tiny Nines, abandoned at the end of the 2016 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, in favor of the two blocks discussed in the prior section of this post (during the RSC17.)

While I made a few new Tiny Nines during 2018, I'm certain that each of these OLD blocks need MORE friends to make a quilt.  

As Angela is offering another RSC19 Sampler, that may be a good place to incorporate some of those blocks.  Win-win!!  Participate in the Sampler AND use up some OLD blocks.  :o))

That being the case, I believe that I will continue this venture into the New Year.  (Hopefully, with a side of quilt block construction!)

Aside from my scrap usage, I also completed 3 of the 6 UFOs on my list from the Winter 2018 (Ravelry) UFO Club.  The list changed throughout the year, but none of the new additions were completed.  Sadly, I developed a bit of "Quilter's Block" on finishing.

Honestly, 2018 didn't feel like a very productive year for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge endeavors.  I might have accomplished more, but as you might have seen, I had another Challenge during the year.  Scrap Attack and some travel interfered with my RSC sewing time.  Wish me luck for a productive 2019!

2018!! What's the {Rainbow Scrap Challenge} Plan, Stan???

Welcome to my planning post for the 2018 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  I have a number of projects in the works and a number of projects on the horizon (or the back burner... whatever!)

This post will focus on my projects for:

NOTE:  Click on the picture to read about this year's Challenge!

Let start with the "In with the new" (projects), shall we?

Mari's Squared Up BOM will be running in conjunction with Angela's 2018 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  It will be a scrap-friendly pattern that uses square, rectangles, and HSTs.  Mari has promised that it is suitable for ALL skill levels.

"X" Blocks - This is a NEW / old project.  These are the Alternate Blocks for the RSC15 Sampler.   I cut all the squares during RSC17, but really want to get on with the sewing.

Then, we move to "Out with the old" (projects) that continue...

Scrap Jar Stars - These blocks were started in 2017 and will continue into 2018, as I don't have enough blocks for a bed quilt and that's where I'm headed with this one.  King sized, to be exact!!

Slab Stars - This quilt began as Slab Blocks made during the RSC
15, my first year of participation.  (These continued through  the RSC16.)  Anyway, Angela had a beautiful RSC15 Sampler planned, but I simply wasn't feeling the sampler block thing that year.  I did, however, want to make a version of the quilt, but it took until 2017 to figure out HOW to accomplish that task!!  The 2018 Rainbow Scrap Challenge will provide me with another opportunity to complete the necessary blocks.

If time permits... 

Maverick Stars, String Blocks, and/or Tiny Nines may work their way back into the line-up.  These were abandoned at the end of the 2016 Rainbow Scrap Challenge, in favor of the two blocks discussed in the prior section of this post.  I'm certain that each block needs MORE of the same in order to build a quilt.  I'm not making any guarantees, but if I find myself with "nothing else to do", I won't  have to wonder what to do next!  :o))

I saw something that I really liked on the internet - it reminded me of my Word of the Year from the recent past:

What I need is more BALANCE between piecing and quilting.

Here's my list of "more" for 2018.
More quilting of larger quilts
More scraps cut and organized
More quilt shows attended
More fun with other quilters

And on the "less" list:
Less fabric I can't think of a use for (I'm gonna donate it!)
Less worrying about UFOs
Less making things just because other people are making them

Let's take a look back to 2017 in Joyful Quilterland...
 One thing I did do was to do MORE of the things I actually SHOULD do instead of only the things that I really WANT to do.  To that end, I completed FIVE of the 15 UFOs on my list from the Winter 2017 (Ravelry) UFO Club.  I'm pretty pleased about that.  One point two five quilts per quarter is SEW much better than it could have been.  (Although, not as good as I had hoped.)

Granted, I might have accomplished more, but I did a fair amount of travelling during 2017.  Some of that travel interfered with sewing time.  Wish me luck for a productive 2018!

To that end, let's take a look at Week 1 of RSC18...
