ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC 2025 - Week 7

Welcome to Week 7 of the 2025 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week is a(nother) 2-day work week so I'm hoping that will translate into some sewing time, but we'll just have to see about that.

Read on, if you are curious as to what transpired...

SUNDAY - Weekly Morning Art Zoom found me catching up on the LINE prompt from Junk Journal January:

Britt and I stayed after for a quick chat...

About my Blue UFO and my plan to have the borders added soon:

MONDAY - Day Off

I was in and out half the day with several necessary errands to run and then I was sewing all afternoon.

TUESDAY - Day Off

I made a quick trip to Britt's to drop off may quilt and took care of a couple other errands while there, but once I got home, I found that Prompt Deck Playground had been postponed.  That left me free to go on a scrap hunt for fabrics for our 2025 Bee Challenge.  I spy some BLUE scraps in the giant tub of batiks:

After Kristen @ Scrap Fabric Love released the video for her Scrappy Strips QAL, I brought out my BLUE Quilted Scrap Baskets and...

Started cutting the required pieces for this month's RSC Donation quilt:

WEDNESDAY - Final day of my 8-day staycation.  What a wonderful time I had!  I began cutting the background pieces for the Scrappy Strips QAL and took a break for my Weekly Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

THURSDAY - Work

My work computer apparently got the message that it's BLUE month at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge because this was today's home screen:

After work, I had to make a stop at the grocery store where I found a fresh supply of my favorite brand of "lip stuff" in a different variety at only $1.36/tube:

When I returned home, I went straight up to the studio to do MORE neutral cutting for the BLUE Donation quilt:

FRIDAY - Work

These lovely flowers arrived with my husband in tow:

At tonight's Weekly Evening Art Zoom I did a whole lot of nothing before settling down to finish up one of the remaining pages from Junk Journal January.  This time it was the CRUMPLED prompt that captured my imagination.  It's hard to see, but I crumpled the paper used for the "sky" in this landscape collage:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  I'll be along later, as I've got a lot to do today - including writing up my post.  (Yikes!)

This morning, Britt and I had a planning meeting about my BLUE quilting UFO.  She had the backing loaded on her longarm and the top was draped across with an array of stitch pattern selections laid out for my final choice:

After lunch, I did some art.  This week's Get Messy class Unfiltered Expression from Laura Dame @lauramixedmedia was fun and freeing:

Later, Knittingsuek and I enjoyed our Weekly Zoom call and then I was back to cutting more pieces for the QAL:

Until next time...

ProjectQUILTING - Season 16.3 - Common Blocks

 COMMON BLOCKS

Welcome to The Joyful Quilter!!  And... Welcome to the wonderful world of Project QUILTING hosted by Kim Lapacek @ Persimon Dreams!!  This is my 6th year of participation in the Challenge.  (Hard to believe its been that long!)  Trish Frankland @ QuiltChicken is the creator of the crazy challenges that participants will face during the next 6 weeks.

Sassy @ Farm Quilter got me started at the beginning of Season 11 by inviting her readers to join in the fun.  I accepted her invitation and the rest is history.  As I have for the past five years, I will be dragging along my friend LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color again this season, as she enjoys having a reason to stretch her creative wings.  Would YOU like to join me in this creative journey, too?

FAIR WARNING:  It's a wild ride, but oh SEW rewarding!

Challenges are given and start to finish you have ONE WEEK to complete your project.  PQ 16.3 can be found at THIS LINK:

Step One...

Read the instructions to see what is required of the third challenge.  Here's what Trish had to say:

PQ 16.3 Common Blocks

Common blocks are the core foundation of our craft – these are the block designs that no one “invented,” instead they’re the legacy we’ve inherited from quilters through the ages. No one owns the copyright on a 16-patch block, or an Ohio star. They’re the basics that belong to us all.
This week, I want you to identify three separate common blocks to use in your finished piece. You may use more, if you wish!
Your project can contain much more – it’s not limited to just three blocks, or even to patchwork. Use your imagination and the solid launchpad of tradition, and let’s see where the week takes us!
We don’t have many rules, but please make sure you read through them and understand what’s going on.
But most of all, have fun!

Step Two...

Contemplate the possibilities.  How will I ever decide?

Why, Joyful???

There are SEW many options!  ANY "common block" is fair game.  The choices are going to be a challenge to narrow down to just three!

Step Three...

Procrastinate, as making my selections takes brain power that I find is in short supply.

HOURS PASS!!!

Step Four...

Head to the studio to gather supplies:

I reached for my BLUE Quilted Scrap Baskets.  That's the Color of the Month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and it is my goal to incorporate it in my project:

Tutorial for these baskets can be found HERE.

Step Five...

Review the rules:

RULE ONE: You must incorporate three (3) common quilt blocks in your project.

You have one week to meet the challenge. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline – that is, started on or after February 2nd, 2025, and linked up by noon Central Time February 9th, 2025.
Each piece must stand alone as DONE to count.
Your project does not need to be a traditional quilt, but must meet at least one of these requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

Incomplete or unfinished does not qualify. Every challenge piece must be a FINISHED project seen through from INCEPTION to COMPLETION during the challenge timeline.  Link up on the PQ16.3 page by Sunday, February 9th at noon CST.

Step Six... Determine which 3 (or more) blocks to include!!!

Here is the list of possibilities:  Jack in the Box, Jewel Box, Old Maid's Puzzle, Ocean Waves, and Year's Favorite.  All of these were found at Patchwork Square.  We'll see what happens during the design process.  I'm off to draft them to the size I'd like.

Step Seven... PLAY!!!

As I began by sorting through my scraps, I looked for bits that caught my interest.  Not finding anything that jumped out at me, I recalled a bag of BLUE scraps that Maggie had given since the ago!

The colors were perfect and a portion of the work was already done for me.  Thank you for double-sewing these HSTs, Maggie!

Here is a bit of my construction process...

(Scroll down to the bottom of the post NOW, if you don't care to see a blow by blow of the making of my quilt.)

On Tuesday afternoon, I drew out my designs...

With my scrap bag of fabric in hand, I laid out the pieces needed.

Block One:

Block Two:

And Block Three:

On Wednesday afternoon, I squared up the Maggie-sewn HSTs:

While waiting for time to make dinner, I decided to start sewing:

By the end of the day this is what I had...

Two completed blocks and one partially completed block, but I forgot to take pictures before moving to the next step.  Sigh...

Thursday afternoon, I put the final block together and here is the set of them...

Then had a think about what to make with the three blocks.

Once that was determined, assembly began:

Friday's task was determining what I was making and deciding on a backing (lining)...

Finding a scrap of batting took no time at all. The was one that was just the right size sitting beside the pressing station.  Minutes later, the quilt was layered and basted:

Finishing tasks took place on Saturday with binding all the joins:

With 23 hours until the deadline my entry is...

DONE!!!

I'm pleased to present my completed entry for PQ 16.3, shown in the series of photos below.

J = Jack in the Box

O = Old Maid's Puzzle

Y = Year's Favorite

Along with a plain square to fit the pieces together of my little Quilted Bucket together:

I used an orphan block for the exterior base...

And a quilt back offcut for the interior base:

There is usually a reason that I participate in these challenges...

... And this time, it's because I enjoy the challenge that ProjectQUILTING provides.  The prompts give me a jumping off point for using more of my fabric scraps!

There you have it...

Process, product, and the REAL reason for accepting this Challenge.

Follow THIS LINK to the Season 16 overview.  Check back on the Challenge release days (or sign-up to be notified automatically) and there may be one that YOU just can't resist.

It's a SHORT turnaround time!

Depending on the size and complexity of your project, that doesn't HAVE to be insurmountable.  With a little creativity and a few evenings, you really CAN do this!  My project
was begun 2 days after the prompt was announced and was finished with nearly a full day to spare!  While my post was ready for release well ahead of the deadline, I have a thing about releasing my post on Sunday.  I hope you enjoyed seeing my process.

Until next time...
Challenge accepted!!!

Remember:  If I can do this, YOU can do it, too!

(Plus, there's a spot to post your completed Project QUILTING inspired projects AFTER the deadline for any of the challenges.)

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC25 - Week 6

Welcome to Week 6 of the 2025 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week is going to be a busy week.  Appointments, meetings, art, and sewing will all play a part in it.

Read on to see how the days unfold...

SUNDAY - Weekly Morning Art Zoom found me slapping gesso on pages of several art journals.  Nothing remotely photo worthy.

MONDAY - Work

Work was followed by a surgical consult, as it turned out that my CT scan revealed chronic inflammation of my gallbladder and evidence of gall stones.  Surgery will be scheduled in a day or two.  Doctor is currently booking 4 - 6 weeks out.

In construction news, the next three SIX houses were landscaped today:

TUESDAY - Work...

Was followed by fabric and design choices for this week's Project QUILTING challenge entry:

WEDNESDAY - Day Off

I've got a thousand things to do today, but focused first on a quick trip to the grocery store.  As I headed out, I noticed that the sod was delivered this morning for the newly landscaped houses:

After putting the groceries away and eating a quick lunch, I did some BLUE scrap sewing while waiting for Zoom time.  Well... Once the squaring up was done, that is:

A bit of stitching was followed by my Weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color with more sewing on the horizon after our call was done:

THURSDAY - Day Off

I opted to attend my (Weekly) Quilt Group meeting, even though a scheduling conflict makes it so that I can only attend when we meet close to home.  Today's meeting was further away, but since Ruth B. was going to be there, I decided to go anyway because I haven't seen her in ages!  The few time she's hosted recently were work days for me.  Here is our group photo of those in attendance:

Once I returned home, I jumped right back into the BLUES:

FRIDAY - Day Off

Knit Group.  We met with the following knitters in attendance...

When I got home, I had a quick lunch and went upstairs to login for Open Art Studio.  I worked on a bunch of random projects, including making a start on yesterday's lesson and finishing up my UNFOLD spread for Junk Journal January.  I'm pleased to mark another prompt as completed, but there are still others waiting from when I fell behind:

After dinner, I attended my Weekly Evening Art Zoom.  I was pleased to finish up the FABRIC prompt for Junk Journal January that I (finally) started arranging this afternoon:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.

Yes. I did some BLUE scrap sewing this week.  Check back tomorrow to see what came of my efforts and which of these backing scraps made the cut:

Until next time...

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC25 - Week 5

Welcome to Week 5 of the 2025 Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week is filled with meetings and projects.  Some of those are virtual and others are in person.  It's going to be a busy week, as I may need to squeeze in a doctor appointment, as well.  It seems a trip to the orthopedic clinic may be in order.  The ER doc may have been a bit over confident about my finger healing without intervention, but more on that when I've made an appointment.  In the meantime, would you like to see how the week panned out?

Let's start with Saturday's Sew Day at SECU Family House...

The following quilters were in attendance:

Britt set up her machine next to mine for a day of sewing...

Thank you for the assistance, Britt!  I couldn't have worked on this UFO without your help:

SUNDAY - PQ 16.2

Weekly Morning Art Zoom found me working on the BUBBLES prompt for Junk Journal January:

And...

An afternoon Zoom session with Knittingsuek:

MONDAY - Work

In neighborhood news, construction workers marked out the foundation for House #12:

I headed upstairs with my computer, but LeeAnna and I had a breakdown in communication concerning this week's Zoom call.  I signed on just in case she showed up, but worked on one of my Junk Journal January pages while I waited:

After dinner, I was back on the computer for this month's Quilt Guild meeting featuring Carol Wilhoit who presented her slide show about Quilting with Metallic Threads:

TUESDAY - Work

I messaged LeeAnna earlier today to see if she would be able to chat this afternoon.  I made a quick stop at the store on my way home, but headed upstairs to sign onto Zoom in case she was available.

While waiting for her to arrive, I worked on some PINK sewing, watched a vlog post and joined my very first Patreon account, Scrap Club with Kristen Hubert from Scrap Fabric Love on YouTube:

Late this afternoon, just after I gave up on waiting, LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color texted to see if I was ready to Zoom.  I headed back upstairs for a quick chat:

WEDNESDAY - Wonderful Wednesday

Work

Afterwards, I did some arting at Woven, and artist date on Get Messy...

And went to dinner with my DH for a Celebration Day:

THURSDAY - Day Off

This morning is my (Weekly) Quilt Group meeting.  I headed that way and found that we weren't actually meeting where I thought we were.  I had missed an email saying that we would be meeting at the Passmore Center instead.  Unfortunately, driving further away from home wasn't going to work for me so I made an appointment at the Walk-In Orthopedic Clinic for a check of my (still) broken finger...

The splint, however, is now in the garbage and I have some desensitization exercises and occupational therapy to do as it continues to heal:

Followed by a stop at the pharmacy and the deli, then raced home for this week's Curiosity Collective on Get Messy.  The day's lesson was Serendipity by Karin Smolinski Aguirre @creativechaosstudio.returns for some abstract painting fun:

Later...

It was back out to my Monthly Evening Quilt Bee meeting with the following members present...

And then Knittingsuek arrived with some Show and Tell...

For ME???

Thank you, Sue!  Such a perfect piece for my gallery wire (and a great way for you to try out your new sewing machine.)

Day Off

That means that I should be able to attend Knit Group.  Right?  Well...  This week the answer is YES!  Here are the four of us who were in attendance:

This afternoon, I tried out the new Open Art Studio hangout with Deandra and friend on Get Messy.  I made a page to commemorate the event:

Tonight at my Weekly Evening Art Zoom, I worked on a few different projects, including filling the last few pages in my journal for the 5 Minute BINGO Challenge from The Ugly Art Club with some random collage:

SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!  I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week.  Yes!  I sewed PINK scraps this week.  (See the link in yesterday's entry.)  I also pulled out my BLUE scrap baskets to prepare for February's scrap sewing:

This morning began with a Zoom chat with Knittingsuek...

Lunch was followed by the Opening of Season art session with my Get Messy friends on Zoom and I invited Britt to continue making art afterwards.  We both got a few random things knocked off our list:

Until next time...
