December 2025 - TABLE SCRAPS Challenge - The Final Link Party

Holiday festivities clouded my vision and the merriment delayed the release of this post!! Please accept my apologies (and make sure to read to the end for an important announcement.)

Welcome to the DECEMBER 2025 edition of the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge here at the Joyful Quilter!!  I'll start with a little backstory, in case you are new here.  (Apologies to my regular readers since you already know all about it.) I'm a scrap quilter who had been setting up individual challenges for several years in conjunction with Angela's (RSC) Rainbow Scrap Challenge @ So Scrappy.  Participants from around the corner, across the country and around the world have been having SEW much fun and we all have MORE scraps to use, so I am pleased to offer the...

In 2025, we have a broad range of quilted items that are appropriate for linking to the Challenge.  Baskets and bins, along with pillows and pin cushions, are all qualifying projects.  Not just the toppers, runners, and mug rugs.  Basically, ANY quilted item qualifies.  The main premise is that you USE the (new or old) SCRAPS from your cutting table (or your friend's cutting table - since that's where the majority of my scraps come from!)

There will be a prompt each month to help get your creative juices flowing.  While you are NOT required to use it in your project, the guiding word will be revealed at the end of each month's LINK PARTY post.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the following month's focus.  It, along with the RSC Color of the Month (as soon as Angela releases it - around the 1st of the month.) will also be added to the 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge page at the top of the blog.

This month's color was:

RAINBOW
The theme for December was:

PEACE/GIVE PEACE a CHANCE

What project did you choose this month, Joyful???

I decided on another entry for my Words and Phrases series and got to work on tracing letters during one of my art sessions early last week.

Things went SEW fast that...

I grabbed a FQ size scrap from the cutting table, a piece of batting offcut, layered it up, and started quilting before realizing that I hadn't taken a single process photo:

At least, I got a photo of the trimmed piece prior to finishing the piece:

When I mentioned binding to LeeAnna during our Weekly Zoom Calls...

She suggested I use a rainbow print as faux-piping.  I thought that sounded like a brilliant idea and went searching in my MULTICOLORED scrap basket once our call was complete:

I came up with enough appropriately sized scrap strips from my 2024 QFK Crayon Challenge that accommodated the strip width required for binding:

Here is my completed December 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project...

Where is its missing is phrase, Joyful???

Well, I had intended to apply the phrase after showing the quilt off at my Weekly Quilt Group.

But...

Ella was in the house and she isn't able to join us often.  Plus, it was her birthday and several members suggested I give it to her.  I thought, "Why not?!"  I can always make another, if I choose!

So...

Here is my entry with its sweet recipient.  Happy birthday, Ella!  I hope this little quilt brings you a rainbow of joy:

What's next, Joyful???

I'm guessing that Angela will probably announce the Color of the Month for January on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge post tomorrow.  I'll still post an update here on the blog as soon as I find out what she decides, but...

THE TABLE SCRAPS CHALLENGE IS CANCELED FOR 2026!!!

As you might know, I've had some health issues for the past year and a half.  I'm currently doing better, but they're not completely resolved (and won't be because they are chronic.)  In an effort to simplify my life, I've been resigning from various responsibilities since my retirement.  My apologies for any disappointment my sudden departure might cause.

If YOU would like to begin hosting this monthly event, please comment below this post.

It's been a fun 5 years, but I can no longer continue the tradition.  I hope you will still visit Angela and continue sewing the fabric scraps from your cutting table with her Color of the Month.  I know that I will!  Please know that I appreciate each quilter who participated in the TSC over the years.  I'm SEW glad that my prompts encouraged you (even though some of them were so... challenging.)

NOTE:  Special thanks to Judy @ Busy Hands are Happy Hands!!  She suggested the Give PEACE a Chance theme.  I'm looking forward to seeing what aspect of the PEACE prompt inspires your work! Remember, though, you are NOT required to use the prompt provided!!  The main goal is using up some of your scraps.

And now...

It's time for YOU to link up your PEACE/GIVE PEACE a CHANCE and/or RAINBOW project in the LINK PARTY below. All entries MUST be submitted by Wednesday, January 7th @ 11:59PM (EDT).

Until next time...

November 2025 - TABLE SCRAPS Challenge - Link Party

Welcome to the NOVEMBER 2025 edition of the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge here at the Joyful Quilter!!  I'll start with a little backstory, in case you are new here.  (Apologies to my regular readers since you already know all about it.) This month's color was - since Angela didn't assign one:

Maker's Choice

The theme for November was:

FAVORITE BOOK or MOVIE

What project did you choose this month, Joyful???

I went through nearly the entire month without a clue!  I was thisclose to taking a pass this time, but thought better of it.  After donning my thinking cap, I took a mental field trip back in time.

Where did this lead???

Back to movies from the 80's, but none of my favorites sparked any ideas for an entry.

Finally, I landed on an idea and ran with it...

Anne of Green Gables fit BOTH of this month's prompts, as I fell in love with the movie during a long ago PBS fundraiser and later was given the book series by my sweet MIL.

I grabbed this bag scraps...

To chose the "field" fabric, dug back in for the "roof" in a solid, and selected a "sky" fabric from the Light BLUE Quilted Scrap Basket:

Next...

I quickly quilted up the scene:

Then came the challenge of the house:

How will you create the gables, Joyful???

Using unconventional methods of faux piping for the "porch roof" and double-fold binding for the roof of the house.  This is how it turned out:

A rummage through the scrap binding box yielded something just the right length in a close enough shade of green to coordinate with the "field" fabric.  Unfortunately, I applied it to the FRONT of the quilt, forcing me to hand sew the binding down:

Here is my (nearly) completed November 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project...

It still needs some details, but my first attempt failed spectacularly.  I thought I could quilt them in, but now I'm going to applique or draw them in instead, but that will have to wait for later.  I've got a quilt back to assemble between now and 10 o'clock tomorrow morning so I've got to take care of that first.

Once the quilt back was sewn together...

I tried the drawn details I hoped to add to the house:

In retrospect...

It might be better to have the quilt in the same room when constructing windows and doors!  Even though I would really like to have my entry done-done, I'm too tired for another go at it tonight.  Stay tuned.  I'll drop an updated photo at some point over the weekend.

What's next, Joyful???

As usual, Angela opted out of a Color of the Month for December on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge line-up for this year.  I decided on the following for our purposes.  The final Color of the Month for 2025 will be...

RAINBOW

December's theme is:

Give Peace a Chance and/or Anything You Find Peaceful

NOTE:  Thank you to Judy @ Busy Hands are Happy Hands for suggesting the theme.  I'm looking forward to seeing what how you will interpret the prompt.  Remember, you are NOT required to use the theme provided!!  The main goal is using up some of your scraps.  I have to admit, I'm unsure of how I might interpret our November challenge!  I'm sure I'll think of something... Eventually.

And now...

It's time for YOU to link up your Favorite Book or Movie and/or MAKER'S Choice (color) project in the LINK PARTY below. All entries MUST be submitted by Wednesday, December 3rd @ 11:59PM (EDT).

This month's color was:

Light and/or Dark NEUTRAL

The theme for October was:

DENIM

What project did you choose this month, Joyful???

I went through a couple of options including a water bottle sling and another mug rug...

Before settling on making an art quilt using a scrap from this quilt backing:

I was inspired by Kristen's recent Mini Quilt series @ Scrap Fabric Love.

I grabbed a scrap of denim, a piece of offcut batting, and layered it up for quilting:

What goes better with denim than orange batik scraps???

I originally thought that I would wrap a canvas, as I've done that before.  Instead, I decided to try another method shown on Kristen's "So Many Ways to Hang Mini Quilts" video...

But then...

Edge stitching and craft glue to the rescue:

Here is my completed October 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project...

This is me attempting to show you the depth of the canvas:

It's 1" deep and will stand on its own.

Here it is in it's new home beside my stash of pre-cuts:

~6" x 6"
Mounted on artist's canvas.

What's next, Joyful???

I'm guessing that Angela will probably announce the Color of the Month for November on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge post tomorrow.  I'll post an update as soon as I find out what she decided on.  Whoops!  No color from Angela this month.  For our purposes, the Color of the Month will be...

Maker's Choice

November's theme is:

INSPIRED BY YOUR FAVORITE BOOK or MOVIE

NOTE:  I'm looking forward to seeing what book or movie will inspire your work! Remember, though, you are NOT required to use the prompt provided!!  The main goal is using up some of your scraps.  I have to say, I'm unsure of how I might interpret our November challenge!

Light/Bright BLUE (above) and/or Light/Bright GREEN (below)

The theme for September was:

RADIO and/or TELEVISION

What project did you choose, Joyful???

I went with a blend of piecework "test patterns"...

And artwork with drawings using my favorite fine point marker...

This is the layout I came up with:

A scrap of batting and an offcut of some backing was soon layered...

Once that was done, I did some minimal quilting through the center in each direction and outlined the televisions, then squared up the little quilt:

I went thru several fabric choices before selecting this one for the binding:

Here is my completed September 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project...

~7" x 7"

Special thanks to fellow Get Messy artist, Laura Allen for sharing images of her TV stamp designs as inspiration for the drawings made for this little quilt!  You can find Laura's art @wowva64 on Instagram.

What's next, Joyful???

I'm guessing that Angela will probably announce the Color of the Month for October on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge post tomorrow.  I'll post an update as soon as I find out what she decided on.

Dark and/or Light NEUTRALS

October's theme is:

DENIM

NOTE:  I love denim!  I know it might seems like a strange prompt, but this year has been about stretching our creativity.  I'm looking forward to seeing how you will interpret this theme!  Will it be something made from denim, using the color of denim, or a representation of a denim object or item?  Remember, while I look forward to seeing what you might make using the month's prompt, you are NOT required to use the suggestion I've provided!!  The main goal is using up some of your scraps.  I have to say, I'm unsure of how I might interpret our September challenge!

This month's color was:

AQUA

Here are the scraps I had to work with:

The theme for August was:

HOT FLASH

What project did you choose, Joyful???

Well, I started with some pretty small scraps from my big bucket of batiks in cool colors:

Then I selected some bright warm strips...

And paired those together:

Here's how they looked before trimming:

If the sea colors were large enough, I sliced them in half for the other side.  If not, there were some pairs of strips.  The hot colors were cut to slim slices before attaching the other side:

I went simple this time...

This is the layout I came up with:

A scrap of batting and an offcut of some batting was soon layered...

And the quilting went quickly:

Once that was done, I squared up the little quilt...

Selected some binding strips and texted Britt for a "Quilt by Committee" session:

Here is my completed August 2025 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project...

~5" x 8"

What's next, Joyful???

I'm guessing that Angela will probably announce the Color of the Month for September on her Rainbow Scrap Challenge post tomorrow.  I'll post an update as soon as I discover her choice - updated on 9/7/25, as Angela expanded the range of color:

Light/Bright BLUE and/or Light/Bright GREEN

September's theme is:

RADIO / TELEVISION

NOTE:  Programs, jingles, the objects themselves?  Go wherever your muse takes you.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you are inspired to make with this theme!  Will it be the object, a jingle or show title, or the image of your favorite character?  Remember, while I look forward to seeing what you might make using the month's prompt, you are NOT required to use the suggestion I've provided!!  The main goal is using up some of your scraps.  I have to say, I'm unsure of how I might interpret our September challenge!
