Mail Call Monday - Artsy Ephemera Swap

Welcome to another edition of Mail Call Monday!!  I'm here to share the Happy Mail that arrived today.  As somewhat of a casual collector of stamps, I was thrilled with these sweet snowflake stamps:

What was in the envelope, Joyful???

I had signed up for the last Ephemera Swap of the year at Get Messy.  My partner was running a bit behind schedule, but I knew she would come through:

Here's a peek at what that envelope was stuffed with...

On the top of the stack of papers was a sweet note from Traci:

Paper, postcards and pockets? Napkins, stickers and tags. So many wonderful goodies. Thank you for swapping with me, Traci! Just look at all the fun stuff she sent:

I was so looking forward to creating a page in my Happy Mail journal.  You know what that means, don't you?  That's right!  I went straight up to the studio and sorted through the contents.

This is the left side of the journal spread...

And here is the right side:

I had so much fun working with the items and there's still a LOT of ephemera remaining to be used in other journals as time goes by.

Until next time...
You can find me up in the studio!

Wonderful Wednesday - Art and More

Welcome to another edition of Wonderful Wednesday!!  Today, I'm going to share the last meeting of the Three Musketeers.  A journal day became a mixed bag when Helena showed up.  It's all good, since it's been AGES since we've seen her!!  :o))

You might have seen this photo in a recent RSC post:

Britt counted QSTs for her Boston Common-style quilt:

I trimmed the borders on the final Positivity QAL Block Drive quilt:

Britt shared some gelli print scraps with me:

I applied binding to the Positivity quilt as the table was buried in fabric and paper:

I presented Britt with her Block Swap HSTs..

And she went back to removing pages from her next altered book journal:

Helena worked on a fun retro Christmas quilt:

Using the plan she worked up:

I was happy to show off this gorgeous collaborative quilt finish:

Some blocks and the layout by Maggie...

And many blocks from Preeti:

I need to see if the day's mini finish (inspired by my blogger friend Chantal) was on my UFO Club list for this quarter:

Spoiler Alert:  It's not.  :o((

I had the pleasure of rooting through more of B's paper scraps and took home pieces for my Board Book Journal in progress:

Not sure what Britt was doing, but there's the stack of blocks she DIDN'T work on today:

Before heading home, I painted a red, orange and yellow sheet of copy paper to go with this beautiful leaf print that Britt so generously gifted me:

And the perfect end to a wonderful day...

I got home to find that DS2 was well on the way to making this lovely Gnocchi Soup from Pressure Luck:

As a side note...

I now have to turn my studio upside down looking for the Swap Blocks that Britt made for me.  I wasn't ready for them (since her blocks weren't done), but she needed space in her studio and remembers bringing them to me.

I don't really recall receiving them, but my brain doesn't seem to be functioning at full power these days.  If she brought them, I would have left them on the cutting table so I wouldn't lose them.  Unfortunately, they aren't there and I have NO MEMORY of where they might have gone!!  :o((

If by chance YOU have seen me show those Sweet Kisses blocks, please let me know in the comments below.  It seems like something I would have written about.

UPDATE!!!

I looked in the most logical place... AGAIN.  I took every project bag OUT of the bin (instead of just "thumbing" through them!)  In the very back, partially covered by some background yardage, were the blocks:

Sorry for the scare, Britt, and thank you SEW much for doing this block swap with me!

Until next time...
Enjoy a FRIEND-ly play day!!!

Kitchen Stitchin' Blog Hop - Day 2 - My STOP on the Hop!!

Welcome to Day 2 of In the Kitchen Stitchin' Blog Hop!!  Our hostess is Carla @ Creatin' in the Sticks.  I signed up as soon as I heard!  I've enjoyed participating in a number of her Blog Hops over the last several years.  This one sounded like a challenge!

Carla's project instructions were as follows...

Create something inspired by the kitchen.
It can be pot holders, tea towels, coasters, placemats, table runners, mug rugs, or even a toaster cover.
It's your interpretation of a kitchen project.
Maybe a quilt with kitchen gadgets or a color in your kitchen that inspires you.
Anything kitchen.  You decide.

Right away I had two ideas about what to make.  Let's see which one of them won out...

The easy route?  That would be a Quilted Instant Pot Cozy.

The challenging project?  A long overdue exchange gift for my friend Belindybe.  She has a habit of requesting projects which stretch my comfort zone in one way or another.  Our exchange for 2020 hasn't been forgotten, but it also still hasn't been made.  :o((

I got a wake up call from Carla one week ahead of the Blog Hop.  Had I started my project?  NO!!! Time to get busy...

SEW...

Finally, I faced the challenge of turning these bits...

... Into flower petals:

It took some time to arrange them...

... And rearrange them with a couple new petals:

Eventually, I hit on a pleasing design...

... Then I removed the petals to assemble the background and replace the flower for stitching:

The backing was also chosen at this stage of the game:

Layering with batting came next...

... Which was followed by quilting...

... Quilting...

... And MORE quilting:

Side one is complete, but I forgot to take a progress photo:

What about the HOT part, Joyful???

Here's the condensed version.  The quilting...

... And the finishing:

Before sewing around the perimeter of the hot pad and turning it right side out, I added a THIRD layer of cotton batting just to be sure surfaces were protected from hot pots and/or pans.  I have a yard of Insul-Bright lost somewhere in my studio.  I guess I will need to make more hot pads (or some bowl cozies) when I finally locate it!  Sigh...

At long last, this gift was complete...

Why I let this project grow to be such a scary thing is beyond me!  It's embarrassing that I allowed it to paralyze me for such a long time, when the reality was not terrible, at all.  Many apologies to dear, sweet Belinda, who was SEW patient with me (and probably gave up all hope of EVER getting her swap gift!)

What about the prize giveaway, Joyful???

Yep!  I haven't forgotten.  For those of you who are new here, it is my habit to make something to share with one lucky winner when I participate in a Blog Hop.  This time is no different.

What do we get?  What do we get???

This time, I'm offering a custom made Mug Rug or Quilted Thread Catcher to the winner.  Your choice of color with my choice of design.  To enter the prize drawing just leave me a comment telling me about your favorite recipe.  It can be any category: appetizer, main dish, side dish, drinks, or desserts!  I'll choose the recipe that sounds the most interesting to me from the comments left prior to 9:00 PM  on Tuesday, April 27th.

The drawing is CLOSED!!!

You MUST leave your email address, if it's not included on your Blogger account, as I will contact the winner via email.

This post would not be complete without...

Sending out a BIG thank you to Needleb for her design advice along the way to a completed project.  Thanks, B!!  I appreciate the suggestions you made when my machine was acting up on Day Three and the fact that you didn't laugh too hard at this blooper moment late in the evening of Day Two of the construction process:

REMINDER:  Who could believe it's already the LAST weekend of the month???  The April 2021 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge is THIS WEEKEND!!!  Anyone with a runner, topper, mug rug, etc. is invited to join in the Link Party.

Throwback Thursday - Circa Spring 2019

Welcome to another edition of Throwback Thursday!!  It's been quite a while since my last post in this series.  I guess you are wondering...

Why now, Joyful???

Well, Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting left the following comment on last week's Mini Monday post:

Haha! You had me chuckling! Cute little finish! Make sure and link it up to the Show Me Something Mini link-up this month: https://www.sarahgoerquilts.com/2020/09/06/show-me-something-mini-linkup/

SEW...

I clicked on the link to find out more.  As it turns out, Sarah @ Sarah Goer Quilts was in the mood to see new or old mini quilts.  At first, I was hesitant to link an old project, but there is one little quilt that I made last year that is worth repeating.  I absolutely love this mini!

What better quilt to share than my TINY Supernova...

100 HSTs within a 5.75" square!!!

You can find the story on this time warp HERE.  That link is filled with process and progress photos, along with the BIG reveal, shown above.

Enjoy the flashback!  I certainly did.  :o))

(Hopefully, if Belinda checks in, she'll tell me if these colors are right for our 2020 swap.)

Tidy Up Tuesday - IMPROV Scrap Swap Challenge Edition

Welcome to another edition of Tidy Up Tuesday!!  Many moons ago, I signed up to participate in an IMPROV Scrap Swap on Ravelry.  From there, I joined the IMPROV Scrap Challenge issued on March 5, 2018.  Along about June of that year, I used the scraps in my bag to make these blocks:

IMG_20180623_174930.jpg

All fabrics included thus far were from Katyknitsnyc.  (Except for that cool camera fabric, which was a scrap from Graylagran the very first time she join my Raleigh Bee for a Sew Day.)  What a great assortment I received!  I was pleased with the way they came together.

But then...

The blocks seemed to want something MORE.  Enter, the scraps from my friend Sfgwife and a change of direction:

IMG_20180903_162929.jpg

With the layout set (and no direction), the blocks went back in the bag.  My excuse was a commission quilt that needed to be completed.  Projects came and went.

Two YEARS later...

The project made it back onto my radar and (more importantly) back on my design floor.  I laid them out and contemplated my next step.

SEW...

I set them straight and determined that the blocks were begging for some breathing room.  Next, I pulled from my very own scraps baskets.  A bit of sashing fit the bill:

After letting that idea percolate overnight, I decided on another color for the remaining sashing strips.  I plan to go with turqouise.  With a twist.  I'm going to partially piece the top before adding those strips.

But...

Prior to piecing, I thought I better go back and check the parameters of the swap.  In doing so, I discovered that I had departed quite a bit from my inspiration piece made by Pearlie Irby Pettway (c.1898 - 1955) and the goal of "Select a Gees Bend quilt for inspiration and make it to suit you. It can be a copy of the original or your interpretation. Both are valuable processes. You can make it ‘regular’ or you can make it ‘wonky’."...  Or had I?

Gees Bend quilts were intended to be our guiding force for this long ago swap challenge.  Along the way, I apparently got lost!!

DO you care, Joyful???

Hmm...  That's a REALLY good question!!  At this point, I'm not really sure that I do.  The challenge was a real... well, challenge for me.  In the 2 years since the challenge was issued, I've come to realize that this type of IMPROV really isn't my style.  Deliberately making a "make do" quilt doesn't feel right to me.

The way from here...

... Is becoming quite clear.  While I appreciate the beauty and inventiveness of the Gees Bend quilters,  I don't feel compelled to remake their quilts.  Yes.  I worked in an improvisational way.  I didn't work with a pattern.  No.  I didn't work without a ruler.  Yes.  I worked with the scraps provided in the swap.

Let's roll the video tape...

Err, I mean let's review the Challenge parameters:

"Select a Gees Bend quilt for inspiration and make it to suit you. It can be a copy of the original or your interpretation. Both are valuable processes. You can make it ‘regular’ or you can make it ‘wonky’."

Ultimately, I created a design that was pleasing to me.  It's not "wonky", but "regular" falls within the "rules" of the Challenge.  It appears that I didn't get lost, after all.  I've pieced the blocks into four sections.  A departure from how I would normally do things:

I chose a solid colored fabric for the sashing and went in search of just the right cornerstone:

The top four choices above came in a scrap bag that I recently brought home from my friend Diane's.  One of those scraps fit the color story and the mood of my challenge piece perfectly:

Joining the sections into rows...

Just a few more seams and it will be a quilt top:

Ta-da!!!  It's NOT a completed quilt, but it IS a completed quilt top:

While it may not LOOK like your typical improvisational quilt, I worked in an improvisational way and (after a very long time) arrived at at completed quilt that pleases me to no end.  (Now is where the tidy up part from the title comes into play, as the pieces have come together and the quilt top can be put away to await quilting.)  I'm hoping for sooner, rather than later.

Until next time...
Know your limits and CHALLENGE them!!!
