June 2023 - ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge - Link Party

Welcome to the June 2023 edition of the ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge here at the Joyful Quilter!!  Thanks for stopping by the Link Party to see what participants have made this month.  In my part of the world, Summer has finally arrived.  Have the warmer temperatures arrived in your neck of the woods?  With the heat of the season, I am (even more) inclined to stay inside and quilt. Since basically ANY small quilted item qualifies for this challenge, I scrounge through my scrap basket to see what I can come up with.  

Each month I offer a prompt to help get your creative juices flowing.  While you are NOT required to use it in your project, the guiding word is revealed at the end of each month's LINK PARTY post.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the next month's focus.  It, along with the RSC Color of the Month (as soon as Angela releases it - around the 1st of the month) will also be added to the 2023 ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge page at the top of the blog.

I'm enjoying stretching my creativity to come up with a design to include each letter, as well as the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Color of the Month.

June's color was Light GREEN and/or Light BLUE.  Plenty of that in my scrap basket(s)...

I was SEW excited about piecing that you only get a few process photos...

I sorted through the baskets shown above, but ended up digging in this BOJ:

Here's the little quilt top that I coerced out of the little Bag Of Joy:

I was having SEW much fun that I also pieced the backing:

Soon enough, the quilting was DONE and you know what time it was, don't you?  The next step was to finish the edges.  This may have been the very first time EVER (in my 30+ years of quilt making) that I've done single-fold binding:

It worked like this:

D + I = DI-ane!!!  The components for my entry were in a scrap bag from my friend Diane.  SEW... Yes, I cheated - SHE gave me the idea upon seeing this month's letter prompts!  :P

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC23 - Week 25

Welcome to Week 25 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This was an art-filled week with a side of fabric scraps.  A two-week art course was coming to an end, but I did stick fairly closely to the RSC Color(s) of the Month.

Let's have a look at the Light BLUE and Light GREEN goodness...

Starting with this painting from last Saturday night.  I mixed the colors myself.  This is my first scene made with gouache paint - a sort of cross between watercolor and acrylic:

SUNDAY - Zooming with Knittingsuek started off my week:

MONDAY - This evening was Quilt Guild and we enjoyed a very special Juneteenth presentation by members of the (AAQC) African American Quilt Circle:

TUESDAY - After work, I watched another video from the Virtual Art Summit and tried my hand at another watercolor technique in my Altered Book Journal:

WEDNESDAY - Once I was done with work today, I made a quick stop at the grocery store and made it home in time for my weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

THURSDAY - Another work day was followed by layers of Light BLUE paint added to another Virtual Art Summit class project:

FRIDAY - Knit Group didn't meet this morning.  Too many thunderstorms in the forecast!  I couldn't have gone anyway, as I was scheduled to work.  Afterwards, I re-watched the last two class that I was interested in and added the trees to my sewn-paper collage from another of the lessons:

RSC Quilters, please notice the Light GREEN and Light BLUE scrap near the top of each container.  also note, the instructor suggested we bring just 2 lbs. of fabric, but the one little bag didn't seem like enough to me!  :P

The scraps (and my sewing machine) were supposed to be taking a trip to Chapel Hill this morning.  I'm not feeling well this morning.  A sinus infection came on full blast during the last 24 hours.  I felt sick enough last night that I canceled my spot in the Scrappy Workshop that I had been looking forward to participating in with the Quilt Guild.  :o((

SUNDAY - Sew Some Love Sunday

Work was followed by laundry and blogging.  Finishing today's post then went upstairs to the studio.

Quilting???  Art-ing??  What will it be?

First, I prepped something Light GREEN and Light BLUE for quilting and chose these two threads...

And then I did some Light GREEN watercolor painting in my Altered Book Journal.  These Funky Florals were from a Workshop Week 2023 class with Megan Wells:

TUESDAY - Work was followed by the last of the laundry and finishing up the last two "cards" from the Index Card a Day Challenge.  There some Light BLUE acrylic paint hiding in this moonlit night sky:

WEDNESDAY - Wonderful Wednesday

Today was my day off and I took full advantage of the time!  Below, you will notice another try at Light GREEN and Light BLUE watercolor in my Altered Book Journal along with my valiant attempt at the Drawing Drop Caps class from Workshop Week:

I did take a break in the classes this afternoon long enough to meet for my weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

THURSDAY - Work and a couple of art classes online.  Portraiture Basics by @pbandjillian was amazing!  While I probably should have chosen a mechanical pencil instead of a plain old No. 2 pencil...

I was back for more Light GREEN watercolor painting, but no sewing:

FRIDAY - Work was followed by more art-ing.  Sewing couldn't get a stitch in edgewise this week!  Today's effort was a mash-up of Day 17's ICAD prompt and @juliemariottart's Sunflower Acrylic Painting from Workshop Week 2023.  I'm pretty sure she didn't mean for it to be done in acrylic marker on paper the size of an index card, but that's what worked for me:

Wonderful Wednesday - Another ARTventure - A Prompted Collaboration

Welcome to another edition of Wonderful Wednesday!!  Oh, did you come here for the quilting?  Sorry!  This is a special ARTventure post.

The prompt for Day 25 of Messy May was COLLABORATION.  Each prompt can be taken in any direction the maker chooses.  I took it quite literally.  You might have read most of the story in Week 21's Rainbow Scrap Challenge post.

My project???

I showed you the items I received and what I made with them, but here's better look...

Along with a close-up photo:

Those lines you see near the bottom of the collage were drawn by Britt.  She tentatively drew them in with pencil, but I wasn't letting her get away with that!  I quickly handed her a pen to ink them in.  The lovely collage paper was provided by Britt.  I used the paint she had selected for me with her current favorite stencil to provide the illusion of a night sky, but saved her inspiration photo for later use.

Britt was tasked with including them in her work...

Once completed, she sent the following photo of her own collaboration page.  She used the collage paper I created and the inspiration photo that I provided for this arched doorway:

The reverse side of the door incorporated the paint I had supplied, as well as a small section of stenciling with my current favorite stencil:

What did she DO with the rest of the items??

Her beautiful collage was hidden behind that arched doorway:

Well done, B!!  She used another portion of my inspiration photo, a section of the dictionary page and a bit of the rub-on sticker from my stash of art supplies to create that lovely collaboration page.

My take away...

This was a TON of fun!  I would gladly do another collaboration.  Thank you, again, for going along with my crazy idea for that Messy May prompt, Britt.  It was an interesting way to stretch our creative muscles by stepping out of our comfort zone with materials not of our own choosing.

Mail Call Monday - Say What?! Prize Patrol - L.O.N.G. Overdue!!!

Welcome to another edition of Mail Call Monday!!  It's been quite a while since the last post in this series.  This one is of the outgoing variety.  As the title indicated, it was a Prize Patrol shipment.  Prize Patrol???  What???

Don't you just hate it when something COMPLETELY falls off your mental radar?!?!

Thank goodness I was checking through my calendar a couple of weeks ago looking for a late-April date!  I spotted a name and address when suddenly memories came flooding back to me.  That DOES explain the small collection of fabrics I found on the end of the ironing board.

You know the one???

The stack of fabrics that has been there so long that you don't even recall what they were for!!  Well, that happened to me the day after Memorial Day.

Here's the fabric:

Once I was reminded what the fabric scraps were for, I got right to work making...

These strip sets:

Those turned into a pair of Pinwheel blocks:

What did you do with the Pinwheels, Joyful???

Well, I decided to pair them with plain squares, stitched them together, and layered them up for quilting:

THIS is what it morphed into:

Here is the completed Quilted Thread Catcher:

It was quite a challenge...

To get a very good photo in the evening light:

The PRIZE DRAWING winner was...

Kathleen @ Kathleen McMusing!  She has received her purple and teal quilted thread catcher so I can share it with you.  Thankfully, she is thrilled with it!  I was a bit worried that she might not like the shades I chose.  ("Purple people" can be funny about things like that, you know.)

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC23 - Week 23

Welcome to Week 23 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week, we're going to start off with a flashback to last Saturday and the reason that I didn't visit the RSC Quilters until later in the link party...

Afterwards, Britt and I enjoyed an ARTventure combining paper with Light GREEN and Light BLUE fabric scraps in honor of this month's Rainbow Scrap Challenge:

With the events of last Saturday out of the way, let the new week begin...

SUNDAY - Sew Some Love Sunday

Zooming with Knittingsuek is a great way to start off any week:

MONDAY - Work was followed by a trip to the grocery store and working on the cover "card" for my Index-Card-a-Day Challenge (ICAD) Journal that I painted over the weekend.  I don't want 61 index cards floating around my studio so I mapped out 61 "cards" (approx. 4" x 5.5") in a spiral bound watercolor notebook:

TUESDAY - Work was followed by a trip to the pharmacy.  Once I got home, a single Light GREEN fabric strap was used to create a stripe for the "card" shown below:

WEDNESDAY - Work...

Was followed by my weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color:

After dinner, I brought out a rainbow of paint colors for a lesson with @consie_atopserenityhill in the FREE Virtual Art Summit hosted by Color Crush Creative:

THURSDAY - Even though I wasn't scheduled to work, my Weekly Quilt Bee met without me today.  I got lost in the studio and wasn't found until it was too late to make it to the meeting.  Sorry, Ruthie!  :o((

I was busy fussy cutting a scrap of Light BLUE fabric to meet the Butterfly prompt for ICAD and using some Light GREEN paint to embellish my interpretation of the Magenta or Fuchsia prompt.  The doodling was an afterthought, but I'm glad that I went the extra step:

FRIDAY - Design Floor Friday

I was pleased to be able to attend Knit Group this morning:

Did you notice the rose colored bag in the middle of the table behind me???

It was filled with sock yarn!!!  I brought it to share with the group.  Thank you for thinking of me, Marsha and my knitting friends thank you, too!  Everyone went home with something and the bag with the dregs went home with Linda.  What a fun day!  :o))

Afterwards, I went back to chasing the rainbow....
