Sew Some Love Sunday - Compassion Quilts - Color Stix Block Drive

Welcome to another edition of Sew Some Love Sunday!!  Many of you know that Cynthia @ Quilting is More Fun than Housework has started a Compassion Quilt program for her local hospital.  It's modeled after Covered in Love hosted by Kat @ Kat and Cat Quilts.

I scoured the stash for lengths of solid fabric... a rarity in my studio.  I found exactly ONE that would work and paired it with some leftover backing fabric from a 2022 T-Quilt.

Here is my block, waiting to be pressed and squared up...

And this is the completed block, pressed and ready to be folded and shipped off to Cynthia:

It headed off in this week's mail.  Cynthia has been alerted, but boy was I shocked when the new postal worker tried to charge me $5 and something to mail it!!  Thankfully, my usual attendant set her straight and my total came to less than $1.50 to send the envelope.  Have YOU mailed off a block or two or 10???  I'm sure Cynthia would appreciated your support.

ScrapHappy Saturday - RSC23 - Week 30

Welcome to Week 30 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  This week, as you will soon see, was a full week of work.  That may or may not have cut into my quilting time.

SUNDAY - Posted the following journal spread on Instagram, but thought YOU might like to see it, too, as I know many of you don't do the IG thing.  It's from the Art Journal Dreams Retreat with Laly Mille.  Imagine my delight when Britt sweetly said that she wouldn't have been surprised if I had told her the spread was Laly's new example for the class.  This was quite similar, as I followed the teacher's every move:

I also did this "card" for the Index Card A Day Challenge hosted by Daisy Yellow Art.  The prompt was Favorite Supply, so you'll see a dictionary page, a gelli print, a magazine image, and Posca markers in use...

And enjoyed my weekly Zoom call with Knittingsuek:

WEDNESDAY - Work

No Zoom call with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color.  After so many weeks/months/years of Zooming, it feels strange to have missed an entire month of calls.  :o((

I worked on catching up on the Living in Your Journal Challenge replays that I missed this week and did these two ICADs in the process.  The Museum prompt was great fun!  I decided to reimagine a drawing I did months ago.  The original perspective drawing was done as a result of a tutorial by David Drazil:

THURSDAY - Work was followed by some catching up on Junk Journal July.  I made a collage responding to the prompt Very Vintage.  If you take a closer look, you will spot a postage stamp from the 1960's (even though it's not marker with the year), a wine bottle (referred to by vintage year) and an image of a rose that is on the cusp of being an antique, as it's from 1925:

July 2023 - ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge - Link Party

Welcome to the July 2023 edition of the ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge here at the Joyful Quilter!!  Thanks for stopping by the Link Party to see what participants have made this month.  In my part of the world, Summer has in full swing.  The heat and humidity of the season has me parked in the studio with the air conditioner funning full blast. Since basically ANY small quilted item qualifies for this challenge, I scrounge through my scrap basket to see what I can come up with.  

Each month I offer a prompt to help get your creative juices flowing.  While you are NOT required to use it in your project, the guiding word is revealed at the end of each month's LINK PARTY post.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the next month's focus.  It, along with the RSC Color of the Month (as soon as Angela releases it - around the 1st of the month) will also be added to the 2023 ABC (Table) SCRAPS Challenge page at the top of the blog.

I'm enjoying stretching my creativity to come up with a design to include each letter, as well as the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Color of the Month.

July's color was RED.  I have a generous amount in my scrap basket...

I had BIG ideas, but you will only see a few process photos...

Because this little quilt top went together MUCH faster than I expected, as I had planned cutting shards of fabric to try a super involved applique, but the cheerful RED pentagon had other ideas for me:

Here, it's layered and the quilting has begun:

Once the quilting was complete, I arrived at the question of how to finish the edges...

There were no RED strips that seemed to work so I chose an alternate edge finish:

This is a closer look at the phrase I chose to include - written with a Pigma pen or my favorite Sharpie fineliner, I can't recall which I grabbed:

The backing was two scrap chunks pieced together:

Welcome to Week 29 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!!  It's crunch week.  We're coming up to the end of the month. Surely, some sewing will play into the schedule.

OK.  With that out of the way, here's what transpired this week...

SUNDAY - My week began with a Zoom call to Knittingsuek, since we were WAY too busy sewing yesterday to do much talking: 

MONDAY - Work was followed by this month's Quilt Guild meeting.  I snapped a photo of this scrappy RED (and blue) quilt for my RSC friends:

I shared this Treehouse block to encourage members to participate in this year's "DOQ Neighborhood" Guild Challenge:

TUESDAY - Work was followed by a Fodder Challenge lesson with Megan Quinlan.  It's a Mini Tag Book that I shrunk down even further.  Instead of staples like the teacher used, I attached my pages using the sewing machine:

WEDNESDAY - Work was preceded by a bit of art-ing.  I decided that I wanted to peel the paint off my brayer to make this ICAD entry for the Raindrops prompt:

FRIDAY - Knit Group was a wonderful event this morning!  Everyone was in attendance and we met at the new bakery in town.  Since the majority of their business is take-out, we basically had the place to ourselves:

My 4th was spent tackling Mt. Washmore!  I did make use of some RED paint and filled up the new storage solution that Sue made for me.  (Thanks, Sue!) For those of you who are wondering, I made "One-Page Wonder" weekly journals for July's Living in Your Journal Challenge hosted by @aworkofheartstudio on IG:

WEDNESDAY - Whew!!  It's SEW good to have a day off after a holiday.  I enjoyed #awohundertheinfluence art journaling session with Andrea Chebeleu:

This is the double-decker journaling technique that Andrea teaches.  The larger journal shown below catches all the leftover paint from the smaller journal spread sitting on top of it:

Not long after, DS2 and I made dinner together.  I tried a RED of a different variety after using some of it in our recipe:

I squared up the final selections for my RED Scrap Jar Star:

FRIDAY - Work was followed by MORE art-ing.  A whole LOT more!  This Intuitive Faces workshop with Aimee Bishop is the class from that started off the Creative Retreat that I'm participating in this weekend.  The face on the left was stamped onto the page on the right to see what might transfer.  The answer?  The left eye and the lips ended up as my starting point:

As you saw in yesterday's entry, I signed up for a (Virtual) Creative Retreat.  It's been a lot of fun and I'll catch up with the quilters as soon as I come up for air.  Meanwhile, this morning's first class was completely WILD!  I thoroughly enjoyed making Kelly Herrick's project in my #dailycreativepracticejournal for the Living in Your Journal Challenge:
