Creating a Quilted Legacy Blog Hop - My STOP on the Hop

 - - - Following in Paula's Footsteps
May 6 - 8, 2020

Does anybody know what day it is?  It's Friday.  Today is my stop on a very special Blog Hop.  I am joining my BlogLand friends in remembering the life of a kind and generous quilter.

Paula Budinger

Celebrating Paula Budinger

May 6, 1941 - February 8, 2020

Paula and I first connected back in 2015, over our love of color, as participants in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Our friendship strengthened over our love for our shared favorite flower.  The iris.  We also shared our support of Jack's Basket and Covered in Love.

The thing that impressed me the most was Paula's love for learning and her giving heart.  I fostered that love of learning by sharing my method for scrappy blocks.  I was pleased to inspire a few of Paula's projects, such as this gift for her granddaughter:

... And these Slab blocks which I shared over a series of emails to Paula back in 2016, after she asked for me to describe my process earlier that year:

I loved the way she took the technique that I used and made it her own by choosing a focus fabric to begin most of her Slab blocks.

She was a prolific quiltmaker, that Paula!  Here are a couple of my favorites from THIS post:

I also really love Paula's beautiful batik quilt...

... And another of her rainbow quilts.  This one, made for her granddaughter's 14th birthday:

Paula shared her work at Paula B Quilts and the more recent work can be seen on her Wordpress site.

What are you making, Joyful???

For this Blog Hop, I originally intended to make a quilt for Jack's Basket, but I also felt compelled to contribute to Little Lou Quilts and Mercyful Quilts.  I wondered (briefly) what I would do about that particular conundrum.  The stars aligned and my answer came in the form of a challenge.

SEW...

This is what happened.  While reading THIS post from The Academic Quilter, I noticed an update regarding the fact that Paula had passed away.  Mari included a link to the obituary and I followed it as a way to give my condolences to the family.

That was on March 1st.  The very day of Paula's Celebration of Life.  Not long after posting my message to Paula's family, I received a comment on that day's Sew Some Love post from Kate @ Smiles From Kate inviting me to participate in this Blog Hop.

While I asked for further information, there was never any doubt that I would participate.  I just needed to figure out how it might fit into my current quilting schedule.  When I confirmed my participation, I told Kate that I would make a quilt for Jack's Basket.  That program only requires a small quilt, which I hoped would be manageable.

Remember that Challenge that I mentioned above???

Well, as it turned out, it also required a Charity Quilt for participation!!  That, folks, is the stars aligning (to give me hope for donating TWO quilts in Paula's memory.)

Completed exactly one month after Paula's passing, this is my Hidden Forest quilt donated to Little Lou Quilts in her honor, a quilt designed and made in ONE week's time:

Let's proceed to the matter of accomplishing a SECOND quilt...

Kate's post Hop invitation post suggested:

In the blog hop we would like you all to make a quilt for a charity, whichever is closest to your heart, and share your creations in the hop.

"We" being Kate and her co-host, Janice @ Color, Creating, and Quilting, who phrased it this way in her participation POST:

Each participant is to make a quilt for the charity of their choice in Paula's honor and share your creation in the blog hop beginning on May 6 and ending May 8.

As I was considering my second quilt for the Hop, I found that Mercyful Quilts needed an influx of quilts and I am donating this in conjunction with this year's Hand2Help Comfort Quilt Drive in honor of Paula:

And, I surpassed my goal for The Hop with a THIRD quilt...

This was a  test quilt for a Magic Star tutorial that was released on my blog.  It will be going out to the good folks @ Jack's Basket:

The Hop also spurred a personal challenge...

Back when Paula posted the following photo, I knew that I wanted to make a Barn Quilt one day.  For this special Blog Hop, I have decided to interpret this photo...

...  Which was taken on one of Paula's Green County (Wisconsin) barn quilts tours with her son, Chris, before he passed away.  Here is my version of the Green County, WI barn quilt:

I think Paula would like the fact that I was inspired by her hopes to create a barn quilt or quilt barn from this intriguing photo.  Shown above in my iris blooming this week.

Will there be a giveaway for this Hop post, too, Joyful???

Many of my readers know that when I participate in a Hop, I like to do a little prize drawing.  This time, I've recreated a portion of Paula's Barn Quilt  photo for one lucky winner:

Approx. 6" square

I hope the winner of this Barn Quilt Mini will enjoy this special connection to Paula and her quilting adventures.  I'm calling this Orange County Barn Quilt (because I don't live in Wisconsin!)  You'll notice a resemblance to Paula and Chris's photo from up the page, but I've put my own twist on it.

In order to win my Orange Co. Barn Quilt mini, make sure to leave me a comment!  Your comment will serve as your entry into my drawing AND the Hop drawings.  Mr. Random will choose a winner after Friday, May 15th, just like the prizes for the Blog Hop.  Good luck and remember to leave me a comment!

DRAWING NOW CLOSED!!!

The WINNER is:

Your lovely quilts are the perfect way to honor Paula's memory.
