What are the details for this week's challenge, Joyful???
Kim is giving Trish a break for this FINAL Quarantine Challenge (for now.) Here's what she had to say about this week's prompt... Q.5
The inspiration for the final Project QUILTING Quarantine Challenge is TRISH. Kim had this to say:
Trish Frankland is the peanut butter to my jelly, my partner in crime … I mean quilting, she brings me down when I’m too far up and brings me up when I’m too far down. Project QUILTING and my quilting world would not be the same without her. AND it’s her birthday on May 31st – the day these are due so I thought this would be a great week to be inspired by her!
If you don’t know Trish here are a few of her loves to inspire you –
- Skulls
- Typography
- Indy 500
- Motorcycles
- Chickens
- Vocabulary
- Balancing Rock Piles
- Art History
- The “F” word
- Music
- Sparkles
I took a tour thru my fabric stash to see what I might have to work with. I'm not gonna lie, right now, I've got NOTHING!!
Who wants to place bets on what I found???
Crickets? (Meaning, still no idea WHAT this challenge will be.)
But...
As I poured over the list (for the THIRD time), I stopped at the word vocabulary. Hmm...
Inspiration struck...
The question is HOW will I interpret my idea?! Since my stash failed me, maybe my scrap bins will house something appropriate. Skulls, typography, and music, maybe. The "F" word? Not in MY stash!!
I went in search of FREE fonts:
U - Naughty Monster
I - Do It With Love
L - Vintage Letterpress
T - Waltograph
I printed the letters out and decided they were too small, so DH sized them up for me (twice) using a scanned copy and his snippet tool. Finally, I cut out the letters:
... And aligned them like my original drawing:
Next came the fun part! Choosing fabric scraps:
Some adjustments were made:
Once that was done, I pulled out my scraps of Steam-a-seam Lite 2 and rough cut so they were bigger than the letters, but smaller than the fabric:
After trimming... Fused first side and cut out the letters (again) and played with the word alignment. I present my Q.5 challenge piece, ready for fusing:
... And fused to the background:
If you know me, you know there is ALWAYS a reason that I participate in these challenges. This time?? The challenge provided me with a housewarming gift for a dear friend who moved into a new house a few months ago.
What are the chances that the FIRST piece of batting that I pick up would be the EXACT size that I needed for this piece?! Pretty incredible, huh:
You'll notice in the photo above, I quilted in the phrase.
I decided the piece didn't require further quilting. It was time to choose a binding. I have a small stash of rainbow scraps that I bought at this year's Quilt Guild Silent Auction. I chose one of those and cut the necessary strips:
I'm really hoping I'll have time to finish this in the morning! The clock is ticking. T minus 14 hours and counting, but I'm too tired to continue.
OK, OK. Back to the finishing....
With fresh eyes (only TWO HOURS before the deadline!) and a renewed sense of enthusiasm, I prepared the binding, stitched it on and then REMEMBERED the two steps that I almost forgot!!
What's that, Joyful!!!
My label and the corner hanging system, that's what. That would be disastrous since this is meant to be a wall hanging AND a gift. Don't you think? I added those and moved on to the binding:
Why did you participate this time???
If you know me, you know there is ALWAYS a reason that I participate in these challenges. This time?? The challenge provided me with a housewarming gift for a dear friend who moved into a new house a few months ago.
Here's a closer look...
... And a better look at the "writing":
I hope she likes it!!
The NEW Blogger was having some issues, so finishing my post was not as easy as it sometimes is. I'm off to link-up with only 30 minutes to go. Yikes! Nothing like the last minute to get something done.
Off to link-up with the Challenge...
Thank you to Kim and Trish for continuing to challenge our creativity during our Coronacation. I really appreciate the time and effort you take to bring this event to us. It was a nice diversion, as we waited for our country to re-open. Stay safe out there!!
Happy birthday, Trish!!!

ReplyDeleteCute! Looks like fun, and what a great gift, too, Joy. I haven't ventured into the updated Blogger, but I suppose I probably should.
ReplyDeleteYour mind ...
ReplyDeleteSo cute!! I love your little Quilt quilt! And in defense of the “F” word, I have to say it’s one of my favorite words to use (in private, not public). It’s just a fun word to say. Yeah, I’m probably going to hell for saying that...
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful quilt!! ❤💛💚💙💜
